You want to build a stronger team. How can you use gamification tools to make it happen?

I’ve had much success in recent years utilizing this method to increase customer satisfaction within my district . The greatest takeaway is to let your team know it’s not about a number but it’s the way to treat your team of employees which do the majority of customer interactions . This grass roots approach over time is a game-changer .

Gamification brings in those happy emotions to build trust among team members thus escalating themselves together towards peak performance.

Team building is more critical than ever before. However, not everyone does team-building properly, so it can feel like just checking off the box. I gamify all my team-building activities. Gamified team-building activities can trigger the dopamine effect. This is connected with feelings of pleasure and reward, the release of dopamine in our brains leads to the sense of enjoyment and satisfaction. By leveraging the dopamine effect through gamified team-building activities, organizations can create an engaging and rewarding environment that not only promotes teamwork but also enhances motivation, learning, and positive emotional states of mind among participants. Team-building is an ongoing and continuous process, not a one-time event.

Team building is a continuous process to make stronger and resilient teams. The rewards of gamifying any continuous process are immense. Some of them are as follows: 1. Greater participation: Many people don't realise the importance of team building. Such people can be involved through gamified activities in the process. 2. Consistency: Gamified activities are addictive in a healthy way and are competitive in nature. This gives a momentum to the process. 3. Variety: Gamified activities have a huge variety and can help in adding more options to your team building program. Moreover, there are many activities other than gamified ones (music, art) that can also help in team building your program.

1. Create a points system: Create a points system that rewards employees for achieving specific goals or milestones. This can help motivate employees to work harder and achieve more. 2. Use leaderboards: Use leaderboards to track employee progress and encourage friendly competition. 3. Offer rewards: Offer rewards such as gift cards, extra vacation days, or other incentives to employees who achieve specific goals. 4. Encourage teamwork: Encourage teamwork by creating games or challenges that require employees to work together to achieve a common goal. 5. Make it fun: Make the gamification process fun by creating games or challenges that are engaging and enjoyable.

I found that the 'testing' should be part of the 'playing'. Don't be concerned if it is the 'right' tool for your team. The understanding that we are playing together and trying different tools is the gamification process of mutual learning. You don't have to separate the 'testing' from the 'playing', use it as part of the exploration to find what makes our juices as a team flow. Imagine the tools are your new toys. Is there any way to know if you like your 'toy' unless you play with it first?

Testing the gamification tool or, what I call, trying before buying, is such an important step. Sometimes a game looks great on paper, or is promoted with an amazing video…but: 1) Is it going to work for your team? 2) Do you have the right capacity? (i.e. the technology, bandwidth, etc)? 3)Does your team have the capability? (tech savvy and tech support). 4) Does your team care? (will they feel compeled enough to engage)

The biggest mistake I’ve seen is people selecting the wrong style of game for their team building. Most tend to gravitate to the competitive ones despite wanting to encourage collaboration! “Competition” is the default mentality for most people engaging in a game. Hence participants almost always assume that every game is a competition…even when I repeat 3 times in the briefing that it is a collaborative game. Collaboration” requires a much greater mind shift and practice. The right gamification tool for this purpose will reward collaboration first and foremost.

These platforms are more than just fun additions; they’re catalysts for team spirit and collaboration. Our org has scheduled “water cooler” type quizzes and interactive challenges every day on slack. Not everyone can make it every time, but it’s a small break to look forward to the same time every day that usually triggers additional discussion afterwards. The type of game seems to be randomized between several available on slack and sometimes even tests how much you know about your colleagues. It helps bring remote teams together and gives something to look forward to regularly throughout the week.

Regardless of the type of game you choose for your team building purpose, a game will remain a game unless three components are included: 1) Purpose: A clear learning objectives or key messages. 2) Facilitation: Someone in charge of briefing the participants, monitoring the progress, making the necessary adjustments to ensure the process stays in line with the purpose, and ensures maximum participant engagement. 3) Debrief: to ensure all the key lessons and messages have been understood by everyone. If these three elements are not included, then the game may have been fun and helped create a couple of laughs and shared memories, but it is not team building.

GM (Game Master) expirience is more than useful in wark gamification: you may create a scenario of simple MORPG and turn every part of work process into game currency or points which allows to achieve next and next levels.

Gamification is essential in EFL classes especially for motivating and engaging learners. However, teachers should be careful while playing any sort of games to avoid noise, and disorder. First, they should choose the right game that suits students' level, age and aims of the lesson. Second, teachers should give clear instructions to avoid interruptions from students. Clear instructions should include the purpose of the game, timing, mode of work, etc. Third, the major purpose of the game should be for learning and minor one for fun. Remind your students when playing games that there is no loser. They are all winners.

Here are two elements to keep in mind when gamifying a team building experience. 1)The game has to be fair and clear. Participants are going to try to find loopholes in order to gain an advantage (yes, even in a collaborative environment). The more room you leave for interpretation of rules, debate, and protests from the participants, the greater the danger of your team building game turning in a team-breaking experience! 2)Keep it simple. There will be enough self-imposed “chaos” by the participants as they try to understand the game and what they have to do to succeed. If you throw in too many steps or special twists that provide zero value to the learning experience, the participants will start to become disengaged and disruptive.

Every goal of the game should be measurable and achievable (it's time to use SMART goals methodology =)). Team members need a set of transparent and clear tools and steps to reach goals, any action should have value and meaning. All the work process should became a game. Don't allow to separate one from another! We'll have a funny game and a boring work otherwise.

Motivating teams requires tapping inherent competitiveness & desire for achievement. Gamify collaboration by tracking metrics on leaderboards, awarding badges for milestones, & using countdown timers to add urgency. Frame routine goals like monthly sales targets as games. Pit squads against each other to incentivize outperforming through accountability. Weave trivia, contests and recognitions into workflows for dopamine hits that sustain engagement. An achievement-oriented culture aligned to vision propels results while bonding teams. Turn essential output into journeys of mastery, purpose & play. Gamification satisfies innate human drives, energizing teams beyond compensation through purposeful competition & advancement built into the job.
