In the field of education it is important that employee appraisal and growth tools empower the employee to create a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates their impact. Educators influence their students in myriad ways, and enabling them to show you how they impact their students allows you to see and to honour their work in a way that is authentic and meaningful to them. Ideally, the tool allows both the educator to collect, analyse, and make meaning of evidence that they have selected AND it allows learners to provide additional evidence and to comment on how the educator has impacted their learning. Tools that are too narrowly focused on numeric data ignore the evidence that tells the clearest and truest story.

Regardless of the specific tool you work with there are a couple of key functions you’ll need to have. First, you’ll need a tool that tracks metadata around the backlog. How fast are new tasks handled and who ends up handling them gives leaders and teams great insights. Second, you need a tool that easily distinguishes priority levels. Simple feature, but it’s vital in both execution and lessons learned. Lastly, you’ll need something that effectively tracks collaboration. Who asks for help? Who regularly steps up? How many cooks are there making your particular broth. If you know who’s working together, what’s a teams’ base rate for processing and how they handle prioritisation, you can start to move mountains.

Selecting the correct software/tool for tracking is important but more important is how the data is shared and what actions will be taken as a direct result of the data. Consideration must be taken for what data to share with everyone and what data should be shared with individuals, as well as what actions may be necessary based on the data recieved.

It's all about acting as a leader if you have a team - generating visions and strategies that allow teams to motivate themselves without having the necessity of doing traditional "management" (or even worse: micro management).

I don't do micromanagement. If I don't trust my employees' performance: No need to hire them. I can do all the tasks by myself. Period.

The tool you use will completely depend on what it is you're measuring & defining as progress. When I was a rehab therapist, Kronos & Rehab Optima were tools that measured productivity (the primary metric used to depict how successful I was at my job), but didn't do anything to accurately measure whether I was a good therapist, growing in expertise that would improve my patient's outcomes. Those were indirectly measured through company KPIs such as length of stay, reduced medications, reduced falls, etc. Some metrics are harder to pinpoint as there are numerous employees that may contribute to the overarching goal. You need both micro and macro data to get a better sense of progress or opportunities to move the needle on a large scale.
