Always have questions prepared in advance. There may be questions that arise within the conversation, but it is always a good idea to have a couple of questions prepared, just in case. Write them down and bring them in with you, incase you have a blank moment. A lack of questions may imply a lack of interest, engagement or enthusiasm for the position.

In interview, you can feel nervous and, therefore, find it hard to listen carefully to the question. This can result in you giving answers that don't answer the question or answers in which you become sidetrack and go off on a tangent. To avoid this, bring in paper and pen and write down the key words in the question. Key referring to those key words - they will help to keep you focused. It is okay to ask for the question to be repeated, if you require it and, if you are unsure about the question, ask for clarification. Remember to smile. It really can make all the difference.

Having just made a transition from primary teaching and senior leadership into Library Services, I think what helped me the most was to reflect on the skills and experience I already had that were transferable to a Libraries and Information sector position. For example, customer service. As a teacher and senior leader, I had significant experience and expertise in answering queries, offering support and liaising with parents, staff, pupils, governors and many external agencies. Providing swift, accurate information and support and ensuring stakeholder satisfaction was essential to build trust and ensure the good reputation of the school. Don't underestimate what skills, knowledge and expertise you may already have to offer.
