You need to simulate aerospace engineering designs. Which software tools should you use?

In aerospace engineering, CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software is indispensable for crafting and tweaking designs in a virtual setting. For aerospace structure, since mostly made from lightweight thin material. It is good to consider to model it in 2D (shell). Or model it with 3D (solid) but make sure that the geometry can be easily converted to shell in simulation software.

CAD software tools can be vary from one department to another. In the aerospace industry specially in the design organisation, We have CATIA and NX for Design engineers whereas Solidworks and AutoCAD are used by Systems Engineers.

For aerospace design simulation, essential tools include CAD (AutoCAD, CATIA), FEA (ANSYS, Abaqus), CFD (Fluent, OpenFOAM), system simulation (MATLAB), electromagnetic simulation (CST Studio Suite), flight dynamics (FlightGear), optimization (modeFRONTIER), and project management (Teamcenter). Integration of these tools ensures comprehensive analysis and streamlined design processes.

Don’t miss out on the theory! The major issues that people face while working with CFD is that they’re lost. CFD is never ending research area. I personally do not understand the assumptions made using different alphabetical. I believe that it is most difficult area in the industry. Nobody can predict nor sure how things works, as the pilot really doesn't know from where gust comes and turbulence occurs all of sudden.

CFD is useful as a checking tool, but it far too slow and resource-heavy to serve as a design tool. Lighter-weight panel codes provide aerodynamic insights much quicker, however, these are often bespoke or tailored to specific requirements. Their prominence makes coding an essential skill in aircraft design and simulation.

It basically need software which allow a wide range of material definition. Since composite and polymer structure is commonly used. Also it need software with very accurate and well defined explicit dynamic and transient response feature.

FEA can be used in two different departments and both are having different prospective and significance in the industry. Firstly, Detailed Structural static, linear , non linear stress analysis can be performed through MSC Nastran and Patran, HyperWorks which allows you to understand the structures behaviour when forces are acting on it such as pressure load. On the other hand, the Structural Analysis with Flow of the fluid such as air can be analysed using ANSYS and OpenFoam. Even this softwares shows you performance parameters such as life generated at particular angle of the airfoil.

There is no "one size fits all" here either. Structural mechanics is a complex mess in aircraft simulation: what works well for flutter may not work for crash mechanics; what works for elastic metal may not work for fracturing composites. I would love to see the one tool to rule them all, but so far we require at least three different packages to address our simulation requirements.

(AGI) that is used for modeling, analyzing, and visualizing complex systems and scenarios involving various components such as satellites, aircraft, ground vehicles, and sensors. And, STK is Capable of Integration with Other Tools, like: Ansys, MATLAB and Python
