They may smear if not let to dry correctly, and ink cartridges can be expensive. Dye-sublimation printers use a heat transfer method to produce continuous-tone images, resulting in high-quality prints with a glossy finish and good durability, but at a higher initial cost and limited medium compatibility. Laser printers may create quality prints for text and graphics, but may lack color accuracy and detail compared to inkjet or dye sublimation printers. They also have restricted media compatibility.

I agree, what you need to do and how you plan to use it is what’s most important. Second, is quality of the print and researching the type of paper you can use with the printer; paper type is whole new conversation though. Speed is the least of your worries. However, you should consider your work load to delivery time.

If your budget allows look for a printer with 12 color output. I prefer the Canon imagePROGRAF line. The expanded color gamut can really help to make your colors pop over traditional CMYK or 6 color printers. Additionally make sure you always buy quality paper and select a paper that suits your project. It is helpful to print a small scale version of your print on the machine/paper combo to ensure you have the results you want. When you have long production runs always remember to spot-check your output to ensure consistency.

My there are many factors, beyond just the printer itself, that affect the overall quality of your print. If you have a printer that is proven to deliver quality output, but you find you’re prints seem to be coming out poorly, then the problem needs to be identified. Is it the file set up, the system settings, the ink, the substrate, the print head, etc? Try to knock out what you can internally and call a tech if you still can’t identify it. It’s not always your printer that causes poor outputs; I’ve had a bad output on a poor-quality material before. I’ve also had a poor output because it was extra humid and the ink seemed to disperse differently. If it’s a consistent issue no matter the changes though, the issue may be with the machine.

Print quality has a cost, but depending on the type of photography you do and print, which in my case is Fine Art, then the very best printing service and/or paper is a must. This way you can deliver to your customers what this expect to receive (hopefully).

In capable hands and with good craft, an inexpensive printer will output competent quality. A top of the line printer without a qualified operator may be able to do the same, but it's not just the printer. That's just one facet of a system that starts with a person who understands how all the pieces work. It starts with a quality image brought into a color-management workflow where many factors are in play. Today's tech makes it easier but just owning the best system is just part of it all. Best thing is to work from your required output back to your source image to see what's the best way to approach the task at hand.

Speed is the least of your concerns as long as your product is quality. The desired turnout of the product should be first and foremost.

Depending on the printer, ink type, and substrate, more time may be needed to let inks fully outgas/cure. New technology is coming out as we continue our pursuit of bettering what we have, so print speed has more to do with capabilities than simply speed. Some printers are developed for high speed quality output while others are not. I’d say the main impact of “speed of print” would be that you risk losing quality if you try to push a printer to do more than it’s made to do. If you skip steps, such as letting ink outgas on vinyl before you laminate it, then you risk it taking a longer time overall if things go wrong and you need to reprint it and do it properly. Learn your machines or ask your vendors/suppliers.

Years ago I was tasked with producing a custom run 600 piece limited edition for a client. After a few weeks of tweaking the marginal film I was given and making the best silk purse from the sow's ear, I was given approval to print. Printing these 600 prints of four images took ten days, 24/7. Printing was about five feet per hour so a new roll had to be loaded every ten hours. After drying, each print was UV spayed to add to durability and longevity. Today, my printer is a couple of generations newer and would have printed the same job much faster and higher quality but the quality would have been just incrementally better. Unless you are a consumer photo-finisher, speed isn't much of a factor, IMO.

If you want print quality don’t go cheap. Replicating your art to a the highest quality does not always come cheap. Color matching takes time.

More expensive doesn’t always equate to better quality, but that said, cheaper doesn’t always stay cheaper either. If you find one store is super popular but way above the other local stores in price, research why. Maybe they’re offering quality printing, staying on top of fixing issues that arise, and using higher quality materials and products than their competitors. Some cheaper companies may be cutting corners on time, material, machinery, etc that allow them to keep costs down. For some projects this is fine, but you need to weigh the value of your project. You’ll save in the long run with quality output if it’s meant to last vs. saving a few initial bucks only to reprint again soon after due to poor quality.

Paper can be one of your highest costs of the process. Ink for my printer costs over $1500/gallon at retail. Yet I use ink at a very small amount that I peg about 2cc per square foot at the most. Usually ink consumption per print, measured by the square foot is quite minimal. There's also spoilage, some makeready and other factors to consider. Roll paper will generally cost less per square sheet than cut sheets. Paper can run you say less than $0.50 s/f to several dollars per square foot. However compared to the days of a wet lab, my costs to produce a large print are considerably less, even without considering inflation, BUT, that's because I have years of experience and a color-managed workflow!

Your printer should be able to handle multiple tasks and multiple weight papers. All paper is not the same. I always choose a printer that can handle a variety of tasks. I prefer a quality printer that can handle all sizes and tasks. Multiple and double sided photo paper. I also want to get a few years out of my printer before I need another. Personally I like inkjet printers that come with a year supply of ink. That can hold up to 250 pages. I have found myself married to HP for this reason. They have never let me down. I cannot stress enough how important it is to us the right weight paper for each task.

Yet nearly evert printer on the market is quite competent in producing high-quality, "pleasing color" work that 99% would be happy. Find a good provider to do you work or take the time, watch classes, research your tools and lots of practice and do it yourself.

Choosing a printing depends on many factors. The main facto to look at is what are you printing and the volume of what you are printing. If you do a lot of printing, Commercial printers are the best as they can print large quantity of prints during a short period of time thus profitable in the long run

I strongly recommend always using OEM inks. In my experience the remanufactured inks are inconsistent in their output (both in volume and color consistency) and more importantly pose a risk to your equipment. At a previous shop I worked we had an Epson wide-format printer that was seriously damaged when the owners switched to using refurbished inks. Since they used unofficial parts the service call was not covered by the manufacturer warranty.
