They are essential for a report, sure, but they are really the most basic form of data visualization. Every deck has them. They are boring. They are not memorable. Your favourite books (storytelling) don't use them. Use other graphics Use your imagination If you are really stuck, talk to your local qualitative researcher about visual metaphors and semiotics

1.Understand your audience and their perspective/agenda. What do they need to take away from your data so they can walk away with an actionable or at least an interesting insight? 2. Work backwards from that to create a visual where the most important insights clearly stand out, and your audience does not need to search through clutter to find it. 3. Your audience should be able to get the point without a talk track

Before creating visualizations, you need to craft your story. Sometimes, I get a piece of scrap paper and literally sketch out the story line. Point A leads to point B. If both of those are true, then the the correct course of action is C. Once you have an outline, you can craft the visualizations that beset illustrate those points. As far as types of visualizations - think about your audience. If they are data savvy, it's ok to show more detail. If they are in upper management, keep it simple.

Line charts, bar charts, scatter plots...be wary of providing too many numbers that clutter not only the report but also your stakeholders' or customer's minds. Sometimes, a single large number on a screen will be more impactful than that same number hidden amongst 10 others. Also, when creating line or bar charts, be sure the range in the charts is equivalent when the charts are side by side, else you might be overstating or understating a data point, which is just poor research ethics.

Rather than focusing on choosing a visualisation format, start by assimilating and writing down the messages you want to convey, for your own clarity. Tons of slides are generated mindlessly - with no thought given to what the message is, how to best balance text vs visual, whether slide is even legible, does it tie in with what was said a few slides ago. There are enough and more online inspirations for Visualisation. Instead, there are literally a handful of credible sources encouraging Thinking. Every slide that looks pretty doesn't necessarily make sense. And every slide that's a Text-dump isn't necessarily laden with insight. Knowing when to use visuals only or text only or a combination of the two - is half the battle won.

Carefully select colors that align with the company's brand identity, creating a cohesive visual presentation and instilling a sense of familiarity among the audience. Utilize a color palette to distinguish different categories within the data, making it easier for viewers to identify trends and patterns. Opt for consistent and legible fonts throughout the visualizations. Choosing a font that complements our brand's tone and style contributes to a cohesive design. Avoid using too many fonts that could potentially distract or confuse the audience. By focusing on specific elements, direct the audience's attention to the most important information, ensuring that the main takeaways are not overshadowed by unnecessary visual elements

When considering look and feel, consider your customer's own look and feel and decide if you will use their template or style or if you will use something different. Whichever you choose, keep the design simple: not too many colors that end up being difficult to tell apart from each other, not too many font sizes that become disruptive, and not too many different styles throughout that makes it look like the report was designed by multiple people.

Use your clients brand guidelines for fonts, color schemes, graphics and more. This will allow the data to resonate more with your client and also external audiences. Keep it fairly simple to highlight the most important findings.

But it's important to choose labels wisely. Not everything needs a label, and too much information on a slide may look unprofessional and block the view of what's really important. The same goes for annotations. Significant differences doesn't always mean interesting differences. Only highlight trends, patterns, or outliers when they contribute value to the analysis or the client's understanding. This depends on the presentation format. If you will be presenting your findings verbally, then be sparing in your use of labels and annotations because you want your audience listening to you rather than squinting at the screen trying to read labels that may or may not be critical information. In a presentation, people *will* read those labels as you are speaking, so if you want folks to focus on your presentation, seek to make the visualizations as self explanatory as possible. If the presentation is more of a report, you can be a bit more text-heavy, but I'd still keep it minimal. American Psychological Association (APA) has some good guidelines for this. Even if one is not doing academic research, they are generally good practices.

This is the crux of any report presentation. How you structure, flow and land the story determines how well the report is received and appreciated. In my experience I've seen two broad methods: 1. Exec Summary first and data later 2. Detailed findings first as a build-up to the final summary. While there's no one correct way, the flow needs to be tailored depending upon the audience - their seniority, time availability, ownership status, actionability/delegation and stakes involved. It is very important to begin with re-iterating the objectives, TG and study design followed by the findings. The conclusion should clearly answer the business objectives and provide next steps, if any.

The best resource I find is Barbara Minto's THE PYRAMID PRINCIPLE. She breaks down how to weave facts into arguments and arguments into a story. Thinks also about your audience and how they process information. Most executives want to see the answer first, since they are often pressed for time. Tell them what's important and then tell you how you got there. This also helps when they have to leave the call early before you've made your killer points.

Highlight surprises or anomalies, adapt your approach to the audience, and keep the presentation concise. I think the value of interactivity is underestimated in data storytelling. Picture your audience looking through the data themselves, tracking correlations and patterns as they happen. Beyond static graphics, interactive visualizations such as dynamic charts can increase engagement and deepen knowledge. To create a data storytelling?that leaves your audience informed, motivated, and wanting more, the goal is to find a balance between an engaging narrative, clear visuals, and interactive exploration.

How to present the data to the audience in a way that is understandable is one of the most important parts of compiling a market research report. Another part that can help this visualization is drawing conclusions from information. To show the audience this information can be effective in making decisions about what matters. Or based on this information, how can he determine his strategy.

The most engaging thing you can do is know your stuff. Please talk to the audience, not the slides you create, even if the visuals are amazing. Let them know what the information means, getting to the "so what" or the "now what" so you are truly useful to them and their work moving forward.

Gauge on your audience, if it is C-Level or Marketing Dept to put forth the focal points important to them. On the slide just have the problem statement, why of that and a one liner about the solution which is defined in numbers and rest preferably be a verbal engagement or at max 3-4 bullet points to be discussed during the conversation.

If you're using Google Slides, use gifs and moving stickers. Some ideas and thoughts are best expressed as moving images. Utilize that to your advantage. We live in a world where we can replicate the Harry Potter universe. Use it to your advantage.

Video is very impactful as a means of imparting insights in a way that your audience will remember and be able to use in their organisations. For example, start incorporating video as part of any qualitative studies you do (most qualitative agencies can do this) and then make sure these are used at key moments in your debriefs to reinforce a point of insight. Everyone remembers the pithy comment from a real respondent - no body remembers the chart or graph!
