You need to mentor someone remotely. How can you use technology to make it work?

Leverage video conferencing tools like Zoom for face-to-face interaction and platforms like Slack for instant messaging. Collaborate in real-time using project management tools such as Trello or Asana, and utilize virtual whiteboards like Miro for visual collaboration. Foster learning through online platforms like Udemy or Coursera, and provide feedback with tools like Loom or Google Forms. Schedule regular check-ins using calendar apps and ensure the chosen tools prioritize security and privacy. Encourage multimedia communication, embrace self-directed learning, and be mindful of cultural differences and time zones. Regularly assess the effectiveness of tools and adapt as needed for a successful remote mentoring experience.

During the Covid times in 2020, I had an opportunity to mentor a student from the rural area of Uttrakhand through @Simple Education Foundation. At that time, there was no source of reaching the child, parents didn't have the smart phones and students couldn't move out of the home due to the pandemic. Hence, we decided to use the Normal Phone call to connect with the child, teach him and mentor him. Choosing the right tool at the right place is a skill. This is how I leveraged the tech by keeping the ground realities in mind.

With the aid of technology you can successfully mentor anyone from anywhere in the world. I have a number of mentees, I send them voice notes, call them on video, or send them chats. I share links on valuable information with them. Gone are the days when mentoring was like apprenticeship. Whatever question a mentee has, can be answered via a phone call, video call or text message. Sometimes, I even host webinars; inviting other speakers and top coach to speak to them. The essence of the webinar is for them to hear another perspective because no one knows it all. So yes, you can successfully mentor someone remotely.

Selecting the appropriate technology tools is crucial for effective remote mentoring. Look for platforms that facilitate communication, collaboration, and feedback. Video conferencing tools like Zoom or Skype enable face-to-face interactions, while messaging apps such as Microsoft Teams allow for quick communication. Additionally, platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox can be used for sharing resources and documents.

In my experience setting up a clear schedule and structure is essential for remote mentoring to ensure consistency and accountability. Establish regular meeting times and stick to them. Create an agenda for each session to outline goals, topics to discuss, and tasks to accomplish. Having a structured approach helps both mentor and mentee stay focused and on track towards achieving their objectives.

In addition, clearly setting your goals at the start will help you better set your schedule and structure. The timeline can indeed differ if you're looking for long or short-term support.

Remember that remote technology is there to support the process not to replace it so it’s important to keep the conversation focused on the objectives, ensuring eye contact and active listening so that you both forget about the fact it’s a remote conversation. Remote technology is like electricity, we can’t do without it, but we really don’t want to stare at it.

Totally agree on this. A mentee should also be given an opportunity to show his/her qualities. So, video meeting is the best as we can not only see the person, but also read the body language and mentor him or her in the right way. Technology is a boon here as the mentee can be from any part of the world and mentoring becomes very easy this way.

A supportive environment also means: "Accept mistakes as a learning opportunity" People who are separated from each other will certainly understand a negative message, even if it is worth it, as they are not close to each other to solve the problem. Things that used to be solved briefly in the office.

To address the challenge of creating a supportive and engaging remote mentoring environment, leverage technology strategically. Establish a personal connection through video calls, ensuring your facial expressions and body language contribute to an intimate mentoring experience. Actively listen during these calls, signaling engagement and interest. Stay in touch between the calls. Use direct messages for feedback, providing both positive reinforcement and constructive insights to keep your mentee motivated. Celebrate your mentee's achievements and progress through instant messaging, boosting morale and maintaining motivation.

According to me I think it is one of the best ways to interact remotely. Recently at Dil Se Khelo it has developed a multi-layered and active/ reactive conversion takes place. It has been one of the most effective ways I have leveraged technology while conversation remotely. Use of pre and post references and surreal uses of technology in getting quick feedbacks and polls has never been easy. I strongly agree with the real time leverage of technology in this case.

One way to do this is to encourage your mentees to engage in group discussions, virtual networking events, or online communities related to their field which can provide a broader perspective and support system. This not only enhances their learning experience but also helps them build a professional network.

In addition to the above, ensure that a physical meeting is possible, especially when you are supporting someone who is within a distance where you can meet. This can enable you to maintain physical contact at least once in a month.
