You need to improve your company's data warehousing. How can you choose the right software?

I will consider the cost implication, How easy is it to be used, Is it scalable? What is the data model and the schema design?. These are just few of the things I will consider.

Before vetting into tools (software) i will try to level set my Enterprise Data Strategy , i would put a Data stack that is loosely coupled with software, that way am keeping software tools abstracted out of core Data Assets. Right away i would look at embracing open Data Architecture around Lakehouses than traditional datawarehousing. Then i will see what it takes for my current data assets to move into Lakehouse style. I will then have my Data Architects draw my charter on File formats vs Table formats for various use cases , say streaming vs BI vs Real time analytics.Then on each use cases i pick s/w vendor who offers plug and play . This way if any new innovation comes my Data stack is undisturbed while i just replace software stack.

Clearly define the type and the volume of data you'll be handling. Consider your current data needs and future scalability. You need to assess already existing systems and tools that are available and you should determine the level of security and compliance features that should be required.

Look out for reviews and recommendations. Ensure that the software is in line with standard and best practices. Consider the cost of ownership and maintenance.

You can request trial versions or demos. You need to check for the software performance and compare it with your specific data and workload. The user interface should be easy to use and handle.

Develop a robust plan for implementing software. Train users to ensure efficiency. Continuously monitor and optimize the software for a better performance. Receive feedback from users and teammates.
