Geological modelling project is unique, a temporary endeavour having a timeframe, completed when a geologic model is accomplished to the satisfaction of the project management. Geological modelling is realized with Geographic Information System, a computer system defined as designed to store, retrieve, manage, display, and analyze all types of geographic and spatial data. It is important to collectively manage geological modelling as program. Yet, the best way to ensure successful geological modelling is to make certain that geologist/map maker are very well trained and/or certified in the product and software that is being used onto geological modelling.

2 Evaluate your data quality and quantity

Another important factor to consider is the quality and quantity of your data. Data is the foundation of any geological model, and it can come from various sources, such as maps, boreholes, wells, seismic surveys, geochemical analysis, geophysical measurements, or remote sensing. Geological modelling involves more than just producing a geologic model to show distribution of lithostratigraphic units. The trained and certified geologist is able to produce an interpretation of surface and subsurface geology with gathered data and observed data from the field and laboratory results. Using specialized software such as GIS with their capabilities of manipulating digital data conversion into geospatial data and analysis, geological modelling is realized.

Once the available geologic data is manipulated into a compatible digital format of the computer system that is being used for a specific interdisciplinary project, visualizing a geologic model is more efficient. One thing in common using specialized software is the computer modelling process of all available geologic data. GIS application is a computer system intended to manipulate and analyze data thus to create a geologic model from the integration of all available geologic data. Making a geologic map (e.g. 2D, 3D, cross section) whilst creating a geologic model using computer system's features and functions are efficiently used for resource exploration, civil engineering, environmental geoscience, and geologic hazard.

Once the software performs fine, free from risks, functions and integrates well with data requirements and modelling techniques, then using the software for geologic model project is efficient throughout their life cycle.

In my opinion, the more you gain experience in different tools, the higher the quality of your results, that’s why you should try different software, even the software that is not commonly suited for geology, i.e using graphic design software is a powerful tool to improve the quality of the graphics (where some geological software packages are not the best regarding the output images), trying different things between random softwares may led you to discover new horizons even for data processing, so try and error is sometimes the most effective way to discover new and original solutions.
