You just finished a job interview. What can you do to stand out from the other candidates?

A thank you letter is the absolute bomb. Sure, you are unlikely to get a reply back... but it doesn't ever hurt and it will take you all of 10 minutes to do. Key point- ask them a contact email to follow up in the interview so you can email them direct. Shows a nice initiative as well! Remember to make the thank you letter about them and what you spoke about and maybe add in one of those afterthoughts on something you felt went really well and they seemed interested in. It is a nice reminder for them and that is always a good thing.

Quite honestly, don't send a thank you note to "stand out." A good interview, and your experience makes you stand out, not a thank you note. Send out a thank you note because that's who you are as a person. Not because of an expectation that it'll make you "stand out."

I think a well-written thank you note is a good idea. Its important to note a few things: 1- If you send one, make sure its well written, summarizes the interview process and shows how you are the right person to solve their problem. 2- Note that there is a good chance that you will not receive a reply. That's OK, view it as an opportunity to make another strong impression. 3- Send it timely- ideally within 24-hours. Its OK to go a bit past that, however, so if it's 48 hours, don't sweat it. 4- While it is acknowledged that sending a TY note is a good idea, don't sweat it if you don't. I have never heard of a situation where one did not get the job because they didn't send a TY note. They're nice, not essential.

If you have not had a reply to your email or an update as to the next steps within 2 weeks, send a follow-up email to express your continued interest in the position. It is OK to send a third follow-up email. Remember it is up to you as a candidate to continue to show interest in the position. A phone call shows initiative especially if you are in sales or marketing! You can also send an LinkedIn direct message or a video message as well.

Interview processes can take weeks to months. At the end of each interview double check your notes to see if the interviewer(s) have already mentioned next steps or follow up and how you will hear back (and the time frame). If it hasn't been mentioned, ensure this is a question that is asked before the interview closes. Typically interviewers will say you will hear back within a particular amount of time, as an applicant, I'd add 2-3 business days to that and email them to check in and show continued interest with a short email and also in that email to thank them for their time and consideration. For example, if they said they'd get back in a week, I may send a check-in email within 9-10 days if I hadn't heard back.

Surely the best way to stand out from others is to be memorable? It occurs to me that expressing yourself honestly and being able to convey the positive aspects of your personality and character to the interviewer should achieve this, however you do it. Don't follow the herd, be authentic.

While these are all good ideas, the concept of standing out from other candidates is based on the false premise that hiring is a meritocracy. While you need to have the basic skills to be considered, it matters far more whether you're known to the company and/or hiring manager than how good you actually are at your job. Remember, it's not the most qualified person who gets hired, it's the best connected person who gets hired. Once that reality sinks in, you'll see your job search in a totally different way.

I think it is always a good idea to do some research on the person interviewing you as well as the company and any newsworthy items that are recent. If you understand the personality differences, learn to mirror your style with theirs and use their words back to them, such as if they use "I think" don't use "I feel." The thinker will generally be turned off by someone who is a feeler, unless they are hiring for a sales or marketing role where the person needs to be highly creative. Of course a follow-up letter is important. Weave in something that was discussed and reiterate your specific ability to help drive a critical area of the work along.

If you were referred in for a job interview, don't forget to reach out to the person/people who referred you and thank them along the way of the process.
