You have a Product Manager interview coming up. What’s the best way to prepare?

It is important for someone to research the company's products, target market, competitors, and recent news. Can you confidently talk about one of the company's product- to an effect of giving a SWOT? One needs to understand the company's mission, values, and strategic goals. As a candidate, you will have an edge over others if you understand key product management concepts, methodologies, and frameworks such as Agile, Scrum etc. You also need to understand how to apply them in your day to day work.

If the product(s) of the company is open for public and available for free-use, definitely try out the product and make note of your observations. Explore the product as much as possible and identify areas of improvement and optimisation. When the interviewer asks questions such as 'Have you used our product?' or 'Could you tell a couple of areas of improvement in our product?', you will have your homework to help you out.

understanding the core problem of your target group is crucial. while a company selling bikes might initially see the problem as "the user wants to buy a bike," deeper research often will a different, underlying need. for example, the user might actually be seeking a solution to the problem: “i need to reach location A, from location B, in a convenient and affordable way." by focusing on this fundamental need, the company can develop products and services that truly address their target audience's pain points. and by all means, this can (and will) lead to a more successful and sustainable business. ??

It is essential to understand the product the company is selling, who their competitors are, and differentiate what makes the company's products standout from their competitors. Almost every company offers trial version of their product. So, I would definitely try out their trial version, explore the UX and make notes of all the queries that can be brought up during the interview. When the interviewer asks "what do you know about the company", it would only show our interests when we particularly talk about the exploration we made, and ask the right questions about the product. Expectation is not to know in-depth on the product, but to have an idea on what the company's goals are, and what they try to achieve using the product.

Ensure your resume highlights relevant experience, such as product development, strategy, and stakeholder management. Showcase successful projects and outcomes, emphasizing your ability to drive product growth and solve customer problems. In your portfolio, include case studies demonstrating your product management skills, such as market research, user testing, and product launches. Be prepared to discuss your contributions to product roadmaps, feature prioritization, and cross-functional collaboration.

Throughout the process, you need to reflect on your career trajectory, starting by emphasizing the coherent and satisfying story of your professional path. Be succinct and to the point when mentioning your joint achievements, roles, and responsibilities to draw attention to the fullness of your product management expertise. Illustrate and relate your accomplishments which implement the key features and capabilities of excellent Product Managers especially as universal as you may be.

The most important part of any product interviews are product cases. Some of the common cases discussed in product interviews are - New Product design, Favorite product & improvement, Product success Metrics, GTM , Root Cause Analysis etc. Always remember that an interviewer is more interested in knowing how structured you are , while you approach these problems , rather than just looking at the solution. So, its important that you follow a framework while solving these cases. Other than this, you also need to prepare for commonly asked behavioral questions and here as well, you'll have to frame your answers in a story telling way.

There is no "READ BEFORE INTERVIEW" books for product management.It would help if you were contextual and relevant; and understand the product psychology of the organisation you are going for the interview. What is their current roadmap and if any problem statement is publicly available, just gather that info and create a solution?

Here are a few samples to prepare : 1. One frequently asked question is to pick an existing product and explain how one could build it from scratch - walk the interviewer through all the steps till delivery of the minimal viable product (MVP) 2. Pick an example of a recent M&A in the interviewer's industry - walk through pros and cons of the merger and identify potential synergies 3. Create a business case for introducing emerging high impact technologies like Generative AI into existing products and processes - what frameworks could one apply

Be prepared enough to address both the "Why are we doing" aspect of the project while also considering "What are we achieving by doing it." Some frequently asked questions in interviews: 1. Describe a scenario where you managed a product from its inception to launch. 2. What is the Average Order Value (AOV) and Return on Investment (ROI) of the project? 3. How did you determine the success of the project? 4. How did you manage post launch product developments? 5.Describe how you managed short term product goals and long term product vision.

As a Product Manager, proficiency in relevant tools and frameworks is crucial for effective task execution and idea communication. Revisit tools and frameworks you've utilized in previous roles, including product management software, analytics platforms, prototyping and wireframing tools, and user testing platforms. Familiarize yourself with agile methodologies, lean startup principles, design thinking, and customer development practices. Be prepared to elucidate how and why you employ these tools and frameworks, emphasizing the benefits they offer in driving product development and innovation. Keeping abreast of these resources enhances your ability to excel in Product Manager roles.

This is crucial. Your grip on the latest tools that are being used will provide a good overview of your abilities to your interviewer. You can also mention how you have utilized these tools to make your products better and what impact they have made. Always be open and curious to learn the latest trends out there and implement those in your workflows.

Complying with the dress code according to the office culture, and wearing professional garments, shows your understanding that you are appropriately dressed and that you respect the organization. Just as important is the manifestation of confidence by nonverbal means such as maintaining an upright posture, maintaining eye contact, offering a firm handshake, and speaking with clarity.

It has been my experience that the more confidence you have in yourself, the more confidence you will project. I recently started a new job, so the interview process if fresh in my mind. Before each interview, I made sure that I was dressed in a blouse and blazer. While that was a little dressier than the company's dress code, wearing that blazer gave me confidence and I wasn't overdressed or underdressed. I also spent at least 10 minutes before the interview focusing on myself and psyching myself up by telling myself that by saying to myself - they need me because I can do that job, I am a perfect fit for the company, I am good at this. By the time the interview was ready to start, I was on fire and ready to show my authentic self.

Speaking of my reality in Brazil, we don't always receive feedback from interviewers. However, that doesn't prevent you from contacting them directly to ask for more details about how you performed. After the interview, it's ideal for you to also provide your feedback about the process and the company, not just receive it. This is a fair exchange that helps both you and the company grow.

One of the things that always worked well for me and resulted in a lot of second interviews and eventually offers was this. Don't be afraid to start the interview yourself. In other words, don't wait for the interviewer to kick things off. Ask the first question. Something like..."Tell me what's going on at [company name] and the importance of product management in the big picture." It shows your assertiveness in a very engaging and conversational manner and makes the job of the interviewer easier.

If presented with a question about improving a product or solving a case study, 1. Never present your solution right away. The first thought is often wrong. 2. Logically breakdown the problem/question. 3. Try to understand the goal and vision behind it. Ask more questions. 4. Vocalize the thought process and steps. Share assumptions. 5. In the end, present with the best possible solution(s)
