A formal closure session is extremely beneficial. An amicable closure provides a great opportunity to reflect on the mentoring journey and celebrate achievements. The goals are mutual understanding, expressions of gratitude, and positive conclusion to the relationship. 1. Acknowledge Successes –reflect on the progress made during the relationship. 2. Transition-identify independent growth; and confirm everyone is on the same page. 3. Feedback-provide feedback to close the relationship; share insights, areas of improvement, and lessons learned. 4. Closure - Chance for smooth and positive conclusion to the relationship, ensures both parties end the relationship with respect, gratitude, and understanding.

The 'ole Exit Interview! It's important for a clear resolution of the Mentorship Agreement, but man is it awkward. Handle it with tact and gratitude for each others services, but realize that it will be rough to get through. It get's easier if you had a good relationship, but usually if its ending, it's ending for a reason, don't sugar coat the results.

In my experience, a formal transition to end the mentor / mentee is extremely beneficial to the relationship. During my transitioning mentor/mentee sessions, we highlight goals, expectations that were achieved and discusses successes / wins. By completing the steps above, the relationship achievements are clearly outlined. We reflect on progress made during the relationship for the mentor / mentee. Next, we identify independent growth; this is also important for the mentor to do and confirm everyone is on the same page. Feedback is next, as it allows everyone to show self-awareness, share insights, and opportunities for improvement. Finally, a positive conclusion ensures both parties end the relationship with respect and gratitude.

Open-ended questions are always important. The reason behind this is that by asking them the questions, it help them answer it for themselves instead of just being told what to do or what to think. Stimulating the other person's brain to get the answers their looking for from themselves is a great way to get them to grow and move on.
