From a first hand perspective ,I went with the unreal route. So far its been a very steep learning curve but the results are exceptional and just gets better as I go along. Your quality and realism are purely going to depend on your creatives skill and how well they can mimic lighting conditions. Lumen is pretty boss and combine that with nanite textures and meshes and you are literally looking at the most cutting edge of visuals.

Realism sounds very attractive when it comes to VR. Coming up with something solid is not that easy though. Most of the technologies available for achieving realism such as ray-tracing are not supported by VR headsets available in the market. This is where the real challenge comes in. Using high-quality textures doesn't always promise good results. Realtime lighting will be very performance intensive. But this might come at the cost of overall graphics quality. Unreal on the other hand provides good features to achieve close to real graphics. Once lighting and reflections are properly baked (which takes a lot of time in some cases), a very comfortable and convincing VR experience can be built. In terms of physics, both of these engines provide realistic physics simulations that make the models behave like real-world objects.

The user interface has a big impact on the experience you're bringing in the VR. Unlike standard devices having fixed resolution and aspect ratio, VR is way more complex and different. In trying to bring realism to the experience, there has to be a UI that doesn't kill the overall realistic experience. Very minimal UI that only pops up at certain places or after certain triggers or after the player presses a certain button on the controller or does a certain gesture can keep the experience balanced. Gamified UI with lots of vibrant colors and animations shall be avoided. Flat UIs with small and simple texts, icons and dialogue boxes will keep the user experience as intended.

I personally think audios play a pivotal role in enhancing the experience of VR. Realistic 3D sounds around different spots in the environment can enhance the overall realism. Sounds can tell users a lot about the environment they are experiencing. Immersive without sound is incomplete. Being in a good area can provide light sound effects, the sound of something dropping or passing by like a car can let the user feel and experience the modules in the environment without even looking at them. Good combination of sounds with visuals enhances the VR experiences and realisms to great extent.

With my experience I can tell that hardware constraints are a big issue currently in the market due to which many expected results are not met. Oculus Quest 2 has much lower rendering power and requires a lot of optimization to achieve a good and realistic experience. With the launch of Quest 3 and Vision Pro, it has been expected to bring much more immersive, and better hardware will provide much more rendering power leading to better quality and a lot more realistic environments. Even though some studios were able to achieve hyper-realism on Quest 2 but Quest 3 and VisionPro will definitely unlock the gate to larger hyper-realistic environments with better FPS.
