There is a need for EVERY educator to understand how students get to Reading Comprehension. I think the BEST information on that is detailed in Hollis Scarborough’s Reading Rope. That’s where learning should begin for MS and HS educators. This shift in reading NEEDS to be about equipping educators with the knowledge to fill in student deficits at the MS and HS levels. Many of those deficits were carried from the elementary school level. I am NOT blaming elementary school teachers either. We could only teach what we were TRAINED to teach. Many of us didn’t get the kind of teacher prep in reading that supported students well through instruction. That was the case for me. But I looked for the information that would improve what I knew because I wanted to do better. Unfortunately, many of the students I taught with my limited knowledge about reading instruction have moved on and are in MS and HS now. Many just carried their struggles into those spaces. If those struggles are not addressed through better instruction, students will only continue to carry them, making reading a challenge. A change MUST be made in order to better support those struggling students. We need to be more intentional about this reading shift. We are missing an entire group of students who are preparing to head into the world.
