Which studio monitors provide the most accurate stereo imaging for professional audio editing?

Choosing the right studio monitors depends on your working style. There are many excellent studio monitors. I use an older pair of JBL monitors. No monitor is perfect. Consequently, stick with what you can afford from a brand and model commonly used in professional studios. What is most important is that you have several reference mixes that you listen to from time to time so that you know how those reference mixes sound on the system you install.

I've been working with Genelec since long time ago and I like it a lot. Many studios all around the world use them. I can work with them for several hours without feeling my ears tired. They are accurate and have a great response in low frecuencies. The stereo image they provide is excellent. The tweeter position is well designed and allows you to have a great spread of the sound, just the way It should be. Every time you are going to buy monitors, If It's possible, place them in the space you are using as control room and try them. This way you can decide better If this model works great in your studio or not.

Rather than a perfect equilateral triangle, I have always had better results by positioning the speakers in such a way that the point of the triangle is actually is actually slightly behind my head. This is the case with my PMC's and I suspect probably most others too

Measuring is always a great way for placing the speakers, but also, listen to them. Sit on the sweet spot and listen to a voice and couple of songs you really now. Try to listen to the exact point where voice is coming from (It should be a well defined spot right in the center) and also listen to the wide stereo image while listening to the music. Of one this ar not well defined, try moving a little the speaker , not only the placement but the angle related to the sweet spot. Room accoustics has always an effect and an interaction with the speakers. Every room is different and monitors should be adjusted an placed according to that specific control room.

It's advisable that your test music is something very familiar to you, that you have heard on other systems and preferably in a similar genre to what you are working with

One very important part of choosing any studio monitor is that you have a consistent reference by which to compare. For me, I have 3 musical selections that I have used for nearly 20 years to judge speakers. I know these recordings intimately and know the intricacies for which to listen. They are my go-to when judging the capacities and quality of any speaker.

There is a law of diminishing returns, a 'sweet-spot' price range where going up from there affords incremental improvements for significantly larger financial outlay. With monitors, I believe there is more than one point where this happens. I have listened to many monitors of all price ranges over the years and even more so than usual over the last few years and I have noticed that the ￡6k per pair mark definitely seems to be one peak spot. Monitors below this do not afford the same level of detail whereas those above do not seem to offer too much improvement. However, for the rest of us, you need to settle on a price range you can afford and audition as many as possible within that range, using music that is familiar to you.

I would always advise to simply buy the best you can at that particular point in time. Don't worry too much about whether they will be your 'forever' speakers, if your needs change, that's fine, but you'll have done a lot of good work in the interim on them, rather than always holding out for something better, so if you do sell them and upgrade, they have earned you the finances to do so.

When you buy some studio gear, you always think in the way you are getting your problem or need solved, and the budget you have. So Buy the best you can right now dont worry a lot for the name of the brand, some times low budget option works really great in comparison with expensive ones. But It's really importat to test the equipment in your studio so you can check what option works best for you.

Make sure you have some sort of isolation mounting to prevent your speakers vibrating and resonating with your desk or stands. I recommend IsoAcoustics (measure your speakers' dimensions and buy the right size) Some other similar units hold your speakers in a fragile manner and allow your speakers to be knocked off the desk or stand quite easily, but I have found these to be excellent at their job and they also enable you to angle the tweeters towards your ears which is very important. If using speaker stands, mass helps to dampen resonances too. Some metal speaker stands allow you to fill them with sand for extra weight, this helps to ground them and further combat resonance.
