As more than 90% of network traffic is encrypted, any passive layer 7 detection will be ineffective, not scalable and expensive so the best architecture choice in my opinion is to monitor the network behavior collecting data directly from capable network devices via IPFIX adding L7 (SSL+IPS+APT+….) in strategic enforcement points in the network.
