To start, I believe that Google Sheets or Excel files are excellent entry points for beginning to visualize certain data objects. They contain the basic elements needed to generate insights within an organization. If we assume some background knowledge (coming from a career with studies in mathematics or statistics), starting with a more professional visualization tool is advisable. I think Tableau or Power BI are excellent options to begin with for several reasons: 1) They are easily accessible and hands-on. 2) There is a huge supportive community. 3) Both interfaces are very user-friendly. Additionally, these tools are widely used in business environments, so if you have the opportunity to learn them, I recommend starting with them

I recommend Tableau as a data visualization platform. It has a free public version ( Tableau Public) so you can learn about and create data viz projects for free! Tableau has a lot of documentation and materials for reference. I mainly use Tableau to create chloropleth maps, bar charts , line trends, box-and- whisker plots , scatter plots, and I’ve also tried origin- destination charts . I don’t do the mind- blowing graphs but those can be done in tableau. I also like that tableau allows you to insert text boxes and photos so you can create a report right there in Tableau .

In a university competition, I moved from using Excel to trying Tableau as I heard from one of the seniors the judges love Tableau visualizations, even though I had never used it before. To my surprise, I was able to learn Tableau quickly in just one night and made a visualization that helped me win. I had the good experience with power BI and qliksense forum, always get the answer that i need so far. But, i do believe tableau has it as well, just use this forum rarely.

Hands down, for me, the Tableau community is the best. With there being a free version available, anyone can get started pretty quickly. The training materials are good but the #datafam community is ever-present in Twitter/X and LinkedIn, as well as regional and global user groups (that double as networking events). Tableau does a great job of rewarding those who contribute to the community with titles and roles like Ambassadors and Visionaries, both in the viz side and the infrastructural side (for server and APIs). The community really is the nicest, most welcoming, and supportive group of people you'll come across in the data and analytics space.
