Balancing both depth and breadth is critical for cybersecurity training. A program can be broad like the ones that teach cybersecurity basic concepts whereas advanced programs tend to go deep into a specific area e.g. incident handling.

This is usually where I rely on SANS Institute. Their training catalog is really huge and their courses are always up-to-date on every topic.

Highly complex & brand-new areas like cloud, AI, IOT, etc. may be something entire security team could be weak on. Some ideas to strengthen knowledge & more importantly key settings include: 1. Bring in an external security firm to evaluate/fix & TEACH key team members the "how to" steps (documenting with screenshots) 2. New security team members should team up & MENTOR with long term experienced leads 3. U-Tube/website free training, books, formal courses 4. Attend trade shows like Microsoft BUILD (aka Tech ED) allows great way to learn practical new solutions 5. Security team should shadow/document an engagement with an external PENTEST firm (if allowed) 6. Constantly monitor changing landscape at security websites (SANS, MSRC)

This is one the key ways I look for valuable courses is by examining the quality of hands on material. Look for exercises and labs that not only focus on installation of tools but also help you practice how to use them and understand how they work underneath. This is essential to increase the depth of your knowledge in cybersecurity.

Platforms I personally like include KodeKloud for DevSecOps and HackTheBox for offensive and defensive security. Hands-on is THE way to learn and never forget new things.

A network segmented & isolated LAB environment is a must to pilot new solutions & certify applications compatibility with potential changes. A pilot team should also test every Windows Update & other security changes on a small scale before fanning this out for all users to be updated. Even a separate test cloud environment could be beneficial to test both security & app changes in advance prior to implementing in PROD. In addition to testing security changes to products, a LAB allows for "trial & error" experimentations. Something one might be afraid to try in PROD can be LAB tested & fine-tuned so that optimal settings are identified. The extra expense of LABs is cost-justified & should be done as a best practice.

Yes but this does not mean that only programs that help you prepare for certifications are valuable. There are tons of courses that do not have an associated certification but offer great insights, help you develop skills with the tools to grow your career. Evaluate a program holistically rather than just focusing on whether it is attached to a certification.

Certifications are always a nice way to get a better chance to be noticed when you're candidating. They're not mandatory. I personnally love them (I passed more than 40 of them), but I would advise you to choose wisely and only take exams that would help you getting a job (like Security+ or CISSP) and let your company pay for others they want you to have. Also keep in mind that this comes with a price, as most of them need to be renewed after 3 or 4 years for a certain cost.

Some certifications require you to take CPE (Continuing professional education) to maintain the certification. These can be demonstrated by taking an additional class, reading new material etc. CPEs are excellent to keep you engaged in learning and growing in the field.

Continuing education is a must in EVERYTHING we do -- as our learning does not stop after college years. It is a great investment in our careers, esp. when you go after industry recognized designations that are widely respected & help on the job. Had I not personally kept up from earliest days of career, I could only work with IBM mainframes, punched cards, and mag tapes - lol :) AREAS OF TRAINING INCLUDE: Cybersecurity is a very complex technical field. New devices, software, and technology are constantly surfacing. Privacy/Security laws & certification techniques must be kept up to date. Cloud based security proficiency (KOL scripting, Azure account management, app hosting, M/365, etc) Keeping up with latest Malware threats

Yes networking is useful as part of the program itself however networking is not a one time thing. Remember to have it as part of your continual involvement in cybersecurity. Look for programs that also offer placement services which can not only connect with hiring managers but also work with you to improve your resume, soft skills, mock interviews etc.
