I've often studied topics I didn't promptly put into practice, and, well... I've since forgotten nearly everything about them! Reading books, papers, and browsing repos is an absolute must in such a dynamic field as data science; however, it is critical to pay attention to the quality of the source material. My favourite reads are those written by academics who also have extensive experience in the industry, so that the theory would perfectly blend with practice.

Learning is Earning. It’s not always compulsory to spend money in learning new skills. In the current scenario there are plethora of YouTube channels, blogs and websites where one can learn and grow. So it’s completely dependent on the person’s motivation to learn.

Two steps to stay up-to-date in any field including data science: 1. know what's happening in the field and 2. develop the practical skills. For example, generative AI and LLMs are trending topics in ML and data science, and huggingFace offers tons of free notebooks for hands-on practice. Tackle challenges of varying difficulty levels, learn from others' solutions, and create a portfolio of your completed projects.

Only constant practicing will help our brains build the muscle memory that prepares us for dealing with different scenarios. Project is the one-way-to-practice-all approach - not only are we going to write codes, explore and engineer with data, train and evaluate models, tune hyperparameters, and so on, through redoing them from scratch over and over again, we challenge ourselves on how to write more efficient code, how to tune hyperparameters more effectively, and how well we can implement our ideas at will. There will be obstacles that slow us down - bugs, poor models, data problems, and more - but only after getting through them can we be confident and gain the know-how and be ready for whatever ahead! Keep trying!

I think that better than practicing is knowing what we want to do. Searching for real-world scenarios is the best way to guide our studies and exercises. The examples we get through courses are important, but as soon as possible you should find some real theme to work with.

Find what works best for YOU. Practicing is necessary to establish and solidify your skillset. But it would be best if you found what is the best approach for you; Here are some examples: - Online courses with assignments and deadlines, such as Udacity (this is what works for me); - Machine Learning Competitions (Kaggle); - Portfolio building; - Data Science interview questions practicing; - Building your ideas from scratch; - Proposing and building solutions in your work.

This one I find really helpful. Constantly writing on new topics requires you to understand the topic you addressing. What I find helpful is to set a goal - write a blog post and publish it on a publication (such as Towards Data Science).

I often say that there is no real way to finalize an intention or work. The idea is that this is improved with each new analysis opportunity. Scenarios change, technologies evolve, we mature and teams tend to welcome our people and perspectives. Even if it is post-work feedback, we must keep an open mind for new learnings. Every time I evolved, it was because I received criticism. Maybe if they had just praised me I wouldn't have grown so much in my area. The incentive to get it right and keep trying is fundamental.

If you can write a summary post of your work and people can understand your summary, then you will also be successful in understanding your work. Explaining your process to others is one of the best ways to understand the gaps in your own knowledge and see your work from another perspective.

In my experience, reading scientific papers from select journals is one of the best and most effective ways of keeping up with trends in data science. I would say that more than teaching you the theory it shows you how some researcher rigorously approached the problem and the data with sometimes a different idea or conceptual connection that could give you insights into your project. Some examples of such journals are Nature, Science, PNAS, Nature Communications, Science Advances, Scientific Reports, Plos One, EPJ Data Science, etc. Of course, you find very specialized papers in these journals but you also have lots of “data science” papers related to almost every other field, you just need to find the right ones.

Always have a drive to learn new stuff. Following the right people on social media would help you keep up with the trend. Another way that I did to keep up with the trend is to set a Google Alert to the keyword I want. For example, "Data Science", "Machine Learning", etc. Every day I would not miss any new update that would important for sharpening my skill.

I've found that participating in hackathons, Kaggle competitions, or contributing to open-source data science projects can provide unique insights that are often not covered in mainstream resources. Following the right people and industry references is one of the best ways to stay current. LinkedIn is insanely good at this. Maybe this is the best tip: look for someone in the area you like and stay on top of everything they share.

Fields of Data Science and AI have been growing so fast that it can become difficult to keep up with the trend. And it might get overwhelming to catch up with every new development. Key to stay in the top is to be open to learn something new everyday. "Everyone starts from zero!!!"

The field of data science is vast and multidisciplinary. Staying sharp requires a balanced approach to learning, embracing challenges, and adapting to new advancements. I have always preferred the "Teaching and mentoring others" approach. DS's who share their knowledge through teaching, mentoring, or writing blog posts often reinforce their own expertise. As a byproduct, I am able to connect with more people and these discussions can lead to new ideas, collaborations, and exposure to cutting-edge advancements.

Go beyond the trends. Trends in AI change every couple of years, so you will always need to catch up if you only focus on what's popular. While keeping up with the trends, identify the topics you enjoy and are curious about. Watch lectures, read papers, and check repositories related to these topics. This will not only enhance your expertise in a subject that you enjoy learning but will also force you to get a better understanding of the fundamentals.

I have 44 years experience in data-processing for business and marketing. Wrote 26 books / courses on it. I dis-agree that it is necessary to "keep learning". That is Only if you are using other people's "tools" and platforms. Back in the 1980's I pioneered what is, today, called "CRM", "Data Mining", "AI". My early tools still work better, than today's software. Contemporary users do NOT properly understand true "psychographics". Nor understand "customer psychology". Which are both necessary to utilize raw data -- to develop ad and sales campaigns that actually work. (Pull profitable Response rate, ROAS, and real Dollars of Revenue. NOT Vanity Metrics -- phony baloney clicks and likes -- which don't "Convert".)

The branch of data science is not new, but technology has allowed it to be better explored now. These opportunities need to be taken advantage of by those who feel captivated by the theme. Companies are still very lacking in good guidance and sometimes do not have the necessary maturity to do a job of this level. And that's not bad news. This scenario is an excellent opportunity for you to grow in the area.
