What's your strategy for effective online assessments?

Yes it's true learning outcomes are more impactful with assessments that are aligned to the learnings. In my opinion assessments aligned with learning outcomes not only are effective in learning process for the learners but also provide an evaluation metrics for the creator to see if the objectives of the learning are met and the communication cycle is complete. It also is am effective feedback mechanism for the creator of the learning.

Coming up with real time application of the learning concepts is a better assessment according to me as it increases the retention because of applied knowledge There could be concepts and a model build in these concepts in a continuous way throughout the course, they could know the challenges that come and how to brainstorm for solutions.

I agree, but AI tools will also make open ended answers more scalable. We can now highlight and give more appropriate feedback as to how the students response can improve.

Though the question umbrellas all of online assessment, it still should reflect the way the student learned from the teacher (i.e., teacher's pedagogy). Pose the question in a way that only a student who has learned from the specific path of the teacher could answer a step in the process (with many right answers possible, but also barriers to incorrect response). This would come (somewhat) closer to authentic assessment.

There are many issues with the concept of assessment type and format, let's start with bias, access and assessment through a cultural lens. Assessment like these are more authentic. Assess Societal connections: attending to community connections. Assess Cultural connections: deep impacts to nature-culture relations. Assess Linking contemporary scientific work and society. Show how students can represent global and/or local concerns. Focus on matters of concern with a focus on social justice. All the while we are focused on helping youth learn about society, themselves, their history and how they can affect their outcomes (from a relational epistemology perspective). These will be a truer assessments of a students learning.

Yes it's true that feedback is a very important aspect of an assessment. Clear instructions about the assessment aid in getting desired feedback both for the learners and the instructors. Group discussions and peer evaluations of the feedback help in assessing the retention of learnings, helps in coming with innovative learning techniques and lead to continuous and effective learning prodigy.

From a competency based assessment perspective, it's extremely important to not just provide instructions on how to complete the task when its online, but also what evidence to collect, and how to collect and submit it. I often see this information missing when we do internal audits. For example, does the student need to video record themselves? Does the LMS have a limit on the file upload size? How should the student submit the video? Maybe into YouTube? How do they protect their privacy? You catch my drift.

In my experience, learners being offered choice in how they show their learning can help them both retain new learning and reduce issues of academic integrity, particularly if the assessment is authentic. Incorporating different methods of feedback into the assessment can also reduce those integrity issues as learners become more accountable for their learning when self- and peer-assessments are expected.

True universeal design for assessments can help in fair and ethical and accessibile assessments for all users but can't really help in integrity checks as technology is so advanced that integrity is very much compromised. Coming with assessments specifically designed to the learning is a strenuous effort but can ease the evaluations and the feedback process.

One way I loved to do this in the classroom was through the use of formative and summarize assessments using the online platforms: Google Forms, Socrative, Padlet, or Quizizz+

To make better online assessments, we should make sure we started with our assessments and work backward to think what skills are needed to achieve success. We also should think through if an interactive type question is creating better data or is it skewing the data because the question is too complex.

Even if it's an online learning, having more real time assessments can be helpful, they are thought provoking and helps in building networks. These are the times if networking and courses which are network oriented have more people enrolled as it helps build connections. Connections are an integral part of today's growth and development.

Check the content of the assessment for compliance against the standards, industry and national assessment standards. This also includes principles of assessment and rules of evidence. Validation, such as through AI automation through the @Prickly2sweet system in Australian Vocational education and training can do this in seconds, Evidence of this activity is also vital.
