What's your best approach to collaborating with construction managers and stakeholders on safety?

One thing I found helpful about escalation, mostly people adding unnecessarily communication channels by keeping everyone in their communication and not following the protocol for reporting which become a hurdle in the escalation of their issues.

I agree with this. Being clear and upfront about everyone’s goals is a great to define a path for all to collaborate to. Being open to feed back is also important, as well as taking and giving constructive criticism.

In my experience the industry could learn from the younger generations approach to technology to assist in tasks, safety and logistical planning. Either way, it’s an exciting time to use our modern tools and technology for the betterment of our infrastructure.

This is absolutely necessary if our future builder, planners and engineers are going to grow into the roles we need them to. Relevant training and practical education is fundamental to our future.

Hi Unless you enforce the use of safety equipment ie hard hats gloves glasses and ear protection you may as well just do the training for the signature on the training attendance sheet. Stop the work if you have to and send the operative to his boss. I have learnt some Polish so I can communicate when I get told NO ENGLISH I have surprised many operatives with my POLISH for hat please

Anybody on site or off should be able to ask questions of site manager or staff Even if the question is daft or stupid The question is not daft or stupid to the person asking and deserve an answer or explanation ASAP not left unanswered for weeks This suggestion / question can save time and money do not dismiss as even labourers and the cleaners have a vast experience of working ??

As money is tight we had a draw from a list of anyone on site and the winner got free parking on site for a week or money Any safety infraction the subcontractor was excluded from the draw When it is known why the subcontractor was excluded it doesn’t happen again as all want the prize ??

Budget or schedule must be secondary considerations to safety. If adequate resources have been allocated to a project (as is a statutory requirement of the client under CDM) this should not be a point of contention. In reality corners are often cut. The only way to engage with construction mangers and stakeholders on safety is to do so objectively, ensuring that your observations are communicated and recorded. It is easier to do this working as an external adviser as opposed to in-house. The quality of a project should not be adversely affected by any decisions regarding safety. Only the shortcomings of the design team (in terms of build considerations)would be responsible for this.
