What’s the most common mistake people make when giving presentations?

Continues reading from the slides. Not making eye contact with the audience. Not engaging audience. Having incomplete information about their topic. Lack of confidence.

1. Not reading the room. A good presenter understands his/her audience and presents something of value to them. If the presentation is of value, the audiences are more likely to engage. A bad presentation is usually the one that attracts no questions from the audience. 2. Not keeping it simple. Boil everything down to its essence, leave the more minute details for further discussion. An interested audience will more than likely engage in said discussion. If the presentation is too complicated to follow, people might lose interest even if the content is of value to them. 3. Not practicing enough. What you (and the rest of us) lack in confidence can only be compensated through practice.

Presenting the slides and NOT telling the story... Slides are helpful but not more than that... you should try to take the audience with you into your story... and give them at least one message that they MIGHT remember tomorrow...

If you're presenting at a conference or event, ask the organiser. They WANT the sessions to go well, so they will tell you who is likely to be there. Look at previous events and reach out to previous speakers. Do some homework; it will make a big difference in your comfort during delivery.

I remember sitting through a presentation in UK, where the presenter spent the entire 45 minutes using baseball as analogies for HR concepts. The audience was lost within 30 seconds because this was a UK audience - not US. The speaker had not bothered or had the respect of the audience to adapt their presentation for an international audience. Knowing who you are speaking to; nationality; seniority are essential. Arrange a call with the organiser to ask what the purpose of the presentation is; what outcomes do they want; what are the company values; anything that shouldn't be mentioned or highlighted. What style works best for the organisation (eg very interactive). you could have a pre-presenation survey. But also ask who will be there

In my opinion, the most common mistake in presentations, regarding content adaptation, is failing to tailor the information to the audience's needs and interests. Without understanding what resonates with them, presenters may include irrelevant or unengaging content, losing the audience's attention. Adapting content involves selecting the most relevant information, examples, and stories, and organizing them logically. Additionally, using transitions, signposts, and summaries helps guide the audience and highlight key takeaways, enhancing their understanding and engagement.

Adding all content whatever has to be conveyed is like creating a reading session... Adding examples and interactive sessions to understand and deliver is best way to communicate via presentation...

We forget to delivery final objective to our customers. We all deviate from the agenda and don't realize who our audiences were.

The best way is to study them, who they are, from which domain they belong, what could be their objectives to attend your presentation, then in addition to create an excellent flow, what else matters is language and some scenario based examples related to their field. This is important so that they can connect your content to their domain that they understand and can eventually relate to.

I find it helpful to start off the presentation by saying "I'd like this to be a discussion, I don't want to talk at you for X amount of time." I like to pause (don't be afraid of the pause!) and ask, is that resonating with you? It keeps audiences engaged and is an excellent time to ask a question or be asked.

A dynamic and enthusiastic delivery can captivate your audience and keep them actively involved throughout your presentation. Consider factors such as tone of voice, pace, and body language. In my experience of presentations, I ensure to make a few eye contacts with whom I’m comfortable. Nevertheless I also attempt to look at others to connect periodically and give a smile or nod to get their attention. Additionally, I get the talk crispier or more elaborate based on audience response through body language.

One thing that I have learnt is that always prepare in advance. Goes out specially for employees with less than 5 years of experience. Just because you have presented a few times or for a few years, there is no point in being overconfident and regretting later. Just prepare your presentation flow and all the points you need to cover in a handheld hard copy or tablet. Prepare the portions where you could be speaking for a long time with less audience interaction. Be extremely alert and present in the room, during large scale presentation events, there can always be last minute expectations and fire to be managed .

One thing that I see recurring is the presenter being bogged down with statistics and numbers. I would prefer telling a story that hooks your audience and just have a picture here and a startling fact there as you deliver your presentation. At the end of the day, the audience should be left with an answer to the question: 'What's in it for me?' Even with all that taken care of, it is always a turn off if the presenter keeps repeating 'um'....,'ah'....., 'so'... and other crunch words.

A common pitfall is reducing your legitimacy before you even open your mouth. Conveying confidence through body language is paramount. Posture, stance, and gestures can significantly impact how the audience perceives the speaker. Projecting confidence not only enhances credibility but also captivates attention. Additionally, eliminating filler words like 'uhm,' 'uh,' and 'like' is crucial. These verbal tics can detract from the clarity and professionalism of the presentation, potentially diminishing the speaker's perceived value and intelligence.

One of the biggest pitfalls in presenting is the Data Dump! It happens when a speaker feels like they need to share everything they know about a topic. When they do that, they overwhelm the audience. This results in the audience feeling confused and unclear. Ultimately, their minds went into overwhelm and they can't process all the information that was shared with them. When this happens, the audience is unable to apply the information shared. The worst part is the speakers aren't asked to speak again, and referral speaking opportunities are nonexistent.

2 things that reduce attention and engagement:- Putting everything on your slide then reading it to your audience - they know how to read what you wrote. Keep it simple on the slide then speak to it while looking at your audience.

Before presenting, you need to do research on the topic of discussion so that you can understand what you’re talking about and responding to questions or queries satisfactorily. This brings about confidence as you illustrate your points and as well brings confidence to the attendees.

You need to remember that every time you present it is going to be different. It is a living and evolving experience, and it will be different every time. You need to allow for this and be okay with it. You want to be in the moment and allow for change. A piece is always more relevant and effectual when it is ever evolving and being refined. So do not fear the unexpected and trying new things. Sometimes the best delivery is the one that went ‘wrong’. Some things are not and should not be repeatable. This is how you find new ideas, new ways to portray, new examples or stories you hadn’t thought of previously that will help to make your points.

When you're giving a presentation to a group, be flexible. Figure out what they already know about the topic and adjust your talk accordingly. Pay attention to how they react, and if they seem bored or confused, change things up. Use stories, pictures, and ask for their thoughts to keep them interested. Treat it like a conversation, not just a one-way talk. Being able to change things on the spot and connecting with them makes the presentation way more interesting for everyone. Its a skill which is essential to make presentation a big hit!!

I’ve sat through a number of cringey MD presentations devoid of rhythm and sincerity. Reading off prompt cards as they pause for the laughter they want after some inane ‘dad’ joke. Know your subject, don’t be too rehearsed and be honest because your audience can always tell.

The biggest issue I see is not preparing sufficiently. Speakers usually don't seem to rehearse enough or check the venue (let alone rehearse in the venue). As a result, they lack credibility as they stumble through the material, failing to be present for their audience. Not really a mistake. Just laziness and lack of awareness.
