At Send Relief we place a strong emphasis on partnership with local communities. We believe that before giving, it's crucial to understand what the community truly needs. This means actively listening to recipients and seeking local input. We don't want to impose our ideas but rather align our efforts with the identified needs of the host community. This approach ensures that our philanthropic actions are driven by the genuine needs of those we aim to help, creating a more impactful and sustainable change. Admittedly, this takes time and it’s dependent upon someone in your organization and spending that time in community with local language and some cultural knowledge of the people you are trying to help.

As part of exploring your values and how they align with community needs, spend time reflecting and communicating your motivations for giving. Start with Why (as Simon Sinek says) then move to the How and What. FYI - Managing taxes is an output not a motivation. ??

Donations, both of time and money, are for me gut reactions. Something just feels right at a given time. Time-wise I volunteer for Cruse Bereavement Support. It’s a privilege to let clients share experiences and emotions, without them hearing judgement or unhelpful advice. I have two direct debits for relatively small amounts for cancer and animal charities We have a charity of the year at National Friendly and I’m an active participant in that. Finally, the two charities closest to my heart are Cruse and a lesser-known charity called the Lily Foundation, which supports families like mine who have Mitochondrial Disease in their lives. I think it’s also right to be honest and say that I like the feeling charitable acts leaves me with.
