On a high level, I tend to agree. However, we are missing the steps between linking the organizations "north star" its mission to its value proposition and its differentiator from competitors. Then and only then comes strategy as plans. Defining the set of goals and objectives to deliver that mission and strategy. When we decide what is our core, and the few priorities we can focus then we also decide what are the projects that we have to invest to stay ahead of competition.

Once you have your goals and criteria, you need to assess your current situation and identify the gaps and opportunities for improvement. How much budget, time, and talent do you have available for your R&D projects? How are your current projects performing in terms of quality, feasibility, relevance, and impact? How do they align with your goals and criteria? What are the risks and uncertainties involved in your R&D projects? How do you balance exploration and exploitation, innovation and efficiency, short-term and long-term goals? Conducting a SWOT analysis or a portfolio analysis can help you gain insights into your current situation and potential areas for improvement.

I agree. But we need to emphasize that as soon as we have a clear vision and then translate this into objectives, in order to define our goals we need first to complete the current state assesment. Then our distance from the AS IS situation to the desired outcome is also our goal and the way we would measure it. I think important is to have the right interactive control systems that allows us to stay nimb and adaptable in our overall strategy, so I agree with the article. However, i think would be helpfull to state there that the way to manage resources and tensions, is through a clear and step by step definitions of action plans.

It's crucial for organizations to make informed decisions for the portfolio. How do we cater for that ? We always start with clarity on goals and selection criteria and proper cascading across. Then we need to agree on a scoring model that weights critera to objectively evaluate projects. In terms of balancing diversity and synergy it would be helpful to provide guidance on how to identify these aspects and weigh tem in the decision making process. In general would be helpfull to have real cases. This would help readers to relate to the concepts discussed.

It's all about data. We need to ensure that we have the right data to measure and analyze. Since monitoring and evaluation of R&D projects is in the core of continuous improvement I am adding below what I believe could enrich this section: 1. Data collection and analysis : providing guidance to that could be very intuitive. 2. Progress measurement : real world examples of how organizations have handled this to succeed. 3. Communication. One of the things large organizations miss, is good - crystal clear communication. Highlight the need to communicate properly successes and challenges
