There are so many different aspects of the construction industry, from planning and design to engineering, materials and product development, general contractors, subcontractors, construction managers, and so on. The life cycle of doing so will make you a well rounded individual who will be able to leverage that experience in a more senior role in the trades or even office position such as project manager or estimator. Later on, the total trajectory along with its lessons will prepare you for a C-Suite position or even ownership. Time, effort, hard work, and of course opportunities from companies willing to help you learn is by far the best skills builder.

Many topics are part of the process of mastering building methods. Invite Hilti, Sika, or even heavy equipment reps to the site. Be critical and ask questions; only the fundamentals will come from a book or a classroom. Tradeshows, current podcasts, or videos evolve faster and will help in advancing your career. But be involved with each step, from finding work to getting the design or bid created. Planning of the work, safety first, then moving to execution, then closing as built, and billing.

These are a few instances; many additional construction-related job pathways might benefit from solid project management abilities. Although I concur that this industry can indeed be very rewarding, I will however, caution the reader. Especially the one thinking of making a move into this industry. It can be relentless and unappreciative. Therefore, choose who you work with carefully. Know what’s right and what’s wrong. And work safe at all times.

The most important aspect of being in construction is that, site conditions is not always sunshine and roses. Also you will spend time away from your family for extended periods, so if this is important to you as a person, carefully think about a career in construction.

This is one that I have told many apprentices that see the industry as a paycheck. I tell them to think about the things our founding fathers have built and how they have contributed to society. We are here building a future legacy of our own to serve people in many ways. From buildings such as schools for teaching, hospitals for care of those sick and injured, houses to live in, power plants for energy, roads to move goods and people. Many things built are what makes this country both survive and grow.

The most enjoyable moment in the construction, is that you can see your effort's fruit. You can visit a city , a house , or a building, and ride a train or railway , or use a bridge and tunnel where you can see your contributions and your efforts. In construction, you can also enjoy seeing your ideas help people to have an easier life.

While personal enjoyment and passion are essential factors in choosing a construction career path, there are other valid perspectives that prioritize different aspects of one's professional life, such as financial stability, career growth, market demand, work-life balance, social impact, job security, alignment with values, and geographic considerations etc. Ultimately, the "best" construction career path varies from person to person and depends on individual goals, priorities, and circumstances.

Construction is one of the oldest jobs and will remain one of the most important jobs till the end. Yet, you will always have a challenge of the place and the location of the project especially when you are working in sites. As civil site engineers, we visit the site when no one can visit and leave it when it becomes ready for other people's visits.

Make sure you like people, feel comfortable with accountability, take pride in everything you do, like working long hours, have great communications skills, and have the ability to manage peoples expectations, are a natural problem solver, feel comfortable dealing with several people looking over your shoulder (one or two clients, banks, inspectors, architects, etc., and have good business management skills. You will be able to hire some of these skills in time but to begin with you will need to multitask and have the management skills and financial where-with-all to get your business off the ground.

This whole thing assumes a very linear career progression, when many successful construction careers are more the product of a kind of planned happenstance. People get pushed and pulled to where they need to be. Show up on time every day, make sure you've got a well-stocked toolbox, ask questions when you need clarification, ask for honest feedback as you go so you know what to improve, and erase the phrase "that's not my job" from your vocabulary. Your career will find you.
