As the common goal of the team is to deliver high-quality, defect-free software, testers communicate software issues effectively and impartially within the team, without assigning blame to any specific developer. Testers not only test the software but also play a crucial role in supporting other stakeholders, including developers, in identifying the root causes of defects.

Test Analysts are not just responsible for identifying problems but also for contributing to the overall improvement of the development process and the final product. Effective communication, analytical thinking, and a keen eye for details are key attributes that make a successful Test Analyst.

Test Lead acts as a bridge between the stakeholders and testers. Test Lead major role is to prepare test plan, test strategy to ensure smooth and timely delivery of quality product.

Roles and responsibilities of a tester vary depending upon the size and complexity of the project as well as the test methodologies and tools being used to achieve the same. Manual, Automation, Performance, Security, Integration, Regression, Mobile, Compliance, Functional, Test analysts and Release engineers all have specific testing roles to play based on the business requirements from the companies as well as the task assigned to achieve them. The roles can also be mixed as well as specific titles and responsibilities may vary. In addition to it, the tester is required to work with other team members from development, product owners and that requires effective collaboration which is important for quality and performance standards.

The role of a Test Analyst serves as a crucial stepping stone for aspiring testers on their journey toward becoming Testing Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). Gone are the days of merely executing scripted scenarios. It's now imperative to analyze why these scenarios are carried out, identify potential scenarios, and devise strategies to minimize defect leakage. Interestingly, automation is no longer a major concern. Those with profound system knowledge can develop scenarios that significantly enhance the quality assurance process.

Test engineer should also consider both functional and non-functional aspects of testing and ensure right type of testing is prioritised.

In my opinion, BDD is one of the most important tools that a Test Automation Engineer can have in their arsenal. Behavior-Driven Development stands out as one of the most crucial techniques in the toolkit of a test automation engineer. BDD is not just a testing methodology; it is a collaborative and communication-focused approach that bridges the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders in the software development process. At its core, BDD emphasizes clear and plain-language specifications that describe the expected behaviour of a system from the end user's perspective.

Test automation engineers often collaborate closely with developers, quality assurance teams, and product managers to ensure that automated tests align with project requirements and objectives. In addition to creating automated test scripts, they are responsible for maintaining and updating existing scripts as the software evolves. While the primary focus is often on UI automation, test automation engineers may also perform API testing to verify the functionality of backend services and data interactions. Staying up-to-date with industry trends, tools, and best practices, as the field of test automation is continually evolving.

In my experience, a test lead is like a bridge between testers, BAs, project managers and stakeholders, so the communication skills play a very important role. A test lead supports the project manager to keep the project on track but at the same time they need to be upfront and represent the testers concerns to the managers and work out the best way forward. A test lead also plays a vital role in defect triage and resolution, getting the right people to look into the issues and work towards the resolution.

In my experience, an Automation Lead/Test Lead plays a pivotal role in the software development lifecycle. They are the driving force behind automating testing processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. This role involves devising a strategic automation roadmap, selecting the right tools and frameworks, and overseeing their implementation. Automation Leads/Test Leads collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define test automation goals, prioritize test cases for automation, and ensure seamless integration of automated tests into the CI/CD pipeline. They establish best practices, coding standards, and guidelines to maintain robust and maintainable automation scripts.

As a test lead, your duties are to monitor other testers to ensure proper execution. Beyond acting as a manager, you also act as a second level of control to think critically about the tests.Responsible for planning, keeping control of testing activities and meet product. goals. Purpose of the job. The person appointed will work on a dedicated project, they will lead, guide and monitor the analysis, design, implementation and execution of testing tasks.

Test lead oversees & coordinates the testing process to ensure high quality s/w delivery. They help to define the testing strategy, create test plans & identify test cases that cover various functional & non-functional aspects of the software. Test leads collaborate closely with other team members including developers, business analysts & project managers, to prioritize & manage testing activities & resources throughout the SDLC. Test leads help select & implement appropriate testing tools & frameworks. They also mentor & guide the testing team & track & report testing progress to clients and management. They identify & analyze defects, coordinate with the dev team for timely resolution & ensure continuous improvement in testing processes.

Test Lead should be able to communicate effectively even with those who have hard time understanding the requirements due to their inability to communicate clearly. Identify the skill gap, honing the skills of the team members, being updated to the new skills and helping the recruitment team in their hiring process. Working to optimize the overall testing effort to deliver better results and overall customer satisfaction.

A test consultant will also influence the wider engineering community to follow whole-team testing approaches including exploratory testing, bug bashes etc and will ensure the stakeholders understands that quality is everyone's responsibility.

Test consultant represents their own company towards the customer but while working on the customer project, they are part of the team. Usually consultant brings a huge amount of knowledge about testing and related issues, preferably even experience with similar projects comes within.

A test consultant, impacts a wider team and influences the team by sharing his ideas and drive the testing process. Based on the strategy & assessments which a consultant takes will have a greater impact on the testing process and quality.

The role comes with the seasoned experience in quality aspects of the products and its software. This is more of an orientation based profile to serve the best practices consolidated across the exposure to various learnings.

We can also add Quality Coach to the list of roles in software testing. The Quality Coach serves as a passionate advocate for quality within the team. A Quality Coach, as defined by Anne-Marie Charrett, is a role within software engineering teams in modern organizations. The main responsibilities of a Quality Coach include guiding, supporting, and rallying the team to collectively own and improve the quality of their software products. This is achieved through various means such as facilitation, education, experimentation, and visualization.

Automation in testing stands as a linchpin for sustaining quality and efficiency. A Test Architect plays a pivotal role in this realm, steering the design and implementation of automated testing strategies. They harness innovative tools and frameworks to simulate a myriad of scenarios, ensuring robust and flawless software deployment. Through their expertise, repetitive tasks are streamlined, leaving room for teams to focus on intricate, high-level challenges. In essence, the fusion of automation and the strategic insight of a Test Architect fosters agility and excellence in software development.

Test Coordinator can be another role. They are SMEs in the project who can help other new testers with their work within the team which in turn helps the Test Lead!

I would imagine there are C-level roles for software testing. I have heard of 1) Chief Testing Officer; 2) Chief Quality Officer (CQO); 3) Chief Quality Assurance Officer (CQAO); 4) Chief Test Automation Officer (CTAO); etc Any of the above can be roles within the software testing organization.

Head of QA or Testing is still a common role that exists. Responsible for a qa function or chapter house. Helping to define long term strategy to steer the direction of travel. They also need to manage senior stakeholders and ensure quality is an important consideration for all.
