Retention and engagement are arguably two of the most important metrics in measuring future product success. While many teams mistakenly focus on high-level metrics like ARR or monthly active users, these are typically driven as a result of core user actions, like number of nights booked per month (Airbnb) or number of pins in the first week after signup (Pinterest). Specific, measurable metrics are valuable in that they become something to strive for that everyone on the team can understand. It’s much easier to move the needle on something well within your control, versus a general metric like revenue, which is impacted by numerous factors.

Another metric to think about is counter metrics or how and if your product/feature is taking away from any other parts of the product. Think about the global maxima rather than the local maxima to build sustainable products.
