I think UX is often looked at as "look and feel," or the arbitrary "helps make things more usable." These often don't make much sense to businesses, even ones who elected to have internal design departments. UX serves an important role in the product development lifecycle because, when done effectively, it can be the first line of defense against risk and simplify the engineering process significantly. The biggest benefit UX can offer is their minds, as they are trained in breaking down problems to their simplest parts and turning them into solutions. In this way, design thinking becomes quantifiable when integrated effectively in product and engineering decisions.

I've been asked by engineers, "what is the business case for UX?" I tell them, "it saves you from building the wrong thing." Our upfront UX research, prototyping, and testing ensures we're solving the right problems, and that our solutions are relevant and usable. Skimping on this upfront work risks wasting a lot of development effort.

As my master's teacher used to say to his students, "You mustn't fall in love with your ideas". Unlike other areas of design where correctness may be a matter of perspective, UX design has a unique ally - the user. Thanks to user feedback, we know which proposals are intuitive and functional, and which concepts need to be discarded. Companies typically invest heavily in market research to predict the commercial viability of their next product. But the role of UX design is just as critical. It is the bridge between market insights and user satisfaction. To ensure the quality of the product experience and customer loyalty, it is necessary to give UX design the proper decision-making power in the company.

To approach UI/UX design, start by understanding the target audience and project goals. Conduct user research, create personas, and define user journeys. Sketch ideas, create wireframes, and iterate based on feedback. Focus on simplicity, consistency, and user flow in your designs. Test prototypes with actual users for valuable insights and refine accordingly. Stay updated on design trends and technologies to enhance your skills. Regularly collaborate with stakeholders and developers for a holistic approach.

Working with cross-functional teams, you also have to keep a tab on the latest design trends in the market to design useful and compelling user experiences.

Spotify Music App/Website: The Great example of good UX design. Its interface is clean, organized, and easy to navigate, with clear categories and buttons for finding and playing music. One of the most impressive features of the app is its personalized recommendations. Based on a user's listening history, Spotify creates tailored playlists and suggestions for new music, making it easy to discover new artists and songs. Another great feature of the app is its seamless integration with other platforms, like Facebook and Google Overall, Spotify's user-centered design and intuitive interface make it a great example of good UX design that keeps users engaged and coming back for more.

Here are 4 examples of UX design. 1- Have you ever seen Magic Mouse from Apple? You want to charge its batteries while using it, but you can’t. 2- Have you seen a shiny blocking popup when you go to a website? You want to close it by pressing the esc key, but you can’t. 3- Ever tried to go to settings or go back using the TV remote control in a dark room? Is it hard? 4- Ever had to wait 5 minuets for the automated phone customer service to read all the numbers and options? That’s not the best UX design.

Examples of UX design include: 1. Mobile Apps: Intuitive navigation, clear layouts, and user-friendly interactions enhance the overall experience. 2. Websites: Well-organized content, easy navigation, and responsive design contribute to a positive user experience. 3. E-commerce Platforms: Streamlined checkout processes, personalized recommendations, and user-friendly product search improve the overall shopping experience. 4. Software Interfaces: User-friendly interfaces with logical workflows and intuitive controls contribute to a positive experience for software users. 5. Smart Devices: Devices like smartphones, smartwatches, and smart home systems benefit from UX design to ensure smooth interactions and user satisfaction.

So, examples of UX design are everywhere! The design of a switch, the design of the ketch-up bottle, it's everywhere. Like, when you’re shopping online and you find exactly what you need easily, or when you're checking out, and it's super quick and hassle-free – that's good UX. It's those little things that make you go, 'Wow, this was so easy and fun.

Some challenges in UX design include balancing aesthetics with functionality, understanding diverse user needs, ensuring accessibility, addressing platform variations, and staying updated with evolving design trends and technologies.

A UX designer navigates a sea of information like an orchestra conductor. Their role? To ensure a performance that is loved by the audience - the users. The musicians, which include developers, UI designers, validators, SEO and marketing teams, must be in sync. For example, if the UI team designs heavy backgrounds and ignores the advice of the SEO team, Google rankings will suffer and users will be frustrated by slow loading times in their browser. So the UX designer acts as a conduit, gathering requirements from all teams, creating realistic proposals and running tests. Communication between all teams is therefore the key to success.

New UX designers, especially those just starting out, often find themselves drowned in self-doubt and question their capabilities, which I believe is a challenge not spoken about enough. When UX becomes overwhelming with lots of laws, principles, etc., and you find it difficult to have it all together, start documenting them and use it as a guide before you start working every day. Document your tools, process, cognitive patterns, learnings, and anything that will help you stay on track. UX is not rocket science. Choose to focus on just one problem at a time. In my opinion, even film directors, customer support staff, chefs, etc., all of them try to understand and care for their users just like us. The user is everywhere. So is UX.

Two big challenges: knowing when to alternate between opening “the diamond” and closing it. Referring to the Double Diamond approach, it means that the research phase makes us expand our vision, and in the definition phase we have to narrow it, and then we need to open it again for ideation, and close it again to materialize the design. Knowing when to make these movements is challenging and requires a lot of exercise. But once you learn this, it clearly makes you stand out.

Speaking of trends, UX design is always evolving. Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz about creating more personalized experiences – kind of like how Netflix recommends shows. And then, there’s the whole voice-activated thing, like Siri or Alexa, making things even more user-friendly. Dark mode is becoming increasingly popular, and so is 3D interactions with minimalist design.

Keep it REAL! Research, Explore, Adapt, Learn. Read the data, keep up with trends, and approach UX like it's its own science! Explore what other designers have come up with and be inspired by each other. Be willing to adapt from your old ways and improve your work - just because it isn't broken doesn't mean you can't improve. And always be eager to learn new ways to build great UX!

Continuous learning is pivotal for UX designers' growth. Attend seminars, read extensively, and explore relevant areas beyond core responsibilities. Embrace curiosity, challenge assumptions, and strive for daily improvement.

Growing as UX designers involves three key actions: Observe, Ask Questions, and Experiment. Observe: Observing user behavior and feedback, particularly the negative, is crucial. Staying observant allows you to discern and understand user interactions effectively. Ask questions: Analyse elements causing user trouble, evaluate the ease of different flows, and question design choices. The more questions you pose to yourself, peers, and users, the more insights you gather, fostering intellectual and emotional growth. Don't shy away from experimentation. Design something unconventional, observe user responses, and strive for inclusivity. Constantly challenge yourself to expand your design horizons, preventing comfort-induced stagnation.

Are you naturally curious and eager to learn more every day? Then UX design is for you! There are lots of opportunities to grow as a professional. For me, it depends on how much time I have. If I have more than 45 minutes, I like to read design books because I can concentrate on them. When I'm doing mechanical tasks like cleaning the kitchen, I usually listen to podcasts or watch videos. Brief moments? Reading posts on LinkedIn. I also like to create my own case studies to improve in the areas I want to and feel free to develop my creativity. And this year I started creating posts on LinkedIn to gather information and improve my presentation skills. So my advice to you is to test yourself and find your way to be your best.

To grow in UX design, I’m always learning. I read a lot, take online courses, and sometimes just play around with different designs. It's like trying new recipes – you've got to keep experimenting to find out what works and what tastes best. And, of course, feedback is key.

Watch out for red flags. Orgs that neglect user research and testing, don't validate with customers, rely solely on personal preferences or opinions, and fail to consider accessibility and inclusivity are signs for sure. I also prefer working in product departments versus marketing.
