1 Why pen testing?

When asked why you perform pen testing and what the benefits and challenges of it are, you have the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the purpose and value of pen testing, as well as the ethical and legal aspects. Pen testing helps to identify and prioritize security risks and vulnerabilities, test the effectiveness of existing security controls and policies, validate compliance with security standards and regulations, improve security awareness among stakeholders, and enhance the security posture of systems and networks. However, there are some challenges associated with pen testing, such as obtaining proper authorization and scope for the pen test, managing expectations with the client or management, avoiding disruption or damage to the system or network, documenting and reporting findings and recommendations, and following up on remediation and retesting.

'Test' to increase 'Resilience' ! ...all other justifications hinge on this simple premise. The difference between having or not a pen testing function that 'works' is often the understanding of 'Why?' and hence spending time ensuring that stakeholders understand the concept of resilience will be well worth it !

Pentesting is required to fulfill 2 major requirements. 1- Compliance need 2- Test the asset against real world threats. 1- Most of the regulatory bodies make it mandatory for organisations to go through a Penetration Tests to ensure the point 2. 2- In current world, companies are more proactive about security and understands the threat to their information. Despite having no regulatory requirements of Pentest, they are willing to do this excercise to keep their assets safe from adverseries.

2 How pen testing?

When it comes to performing pen testing, you can demonstrate your knowledge of the methodology and the tools and techniques used for different phases and scenarios. Generally, this includes planning and scoping, reconnaissance, exploitation, post-exploitation, and reporting. Additionally, you can mention the tools and techniques used for specific types of pen testing, such as web application pen testing with OWASP ZAP and SQLmap; network pen testing with Wireshark and Tcpdump; wireless pen testing with Aircrack-ng and Kismet; and social engineering pen testing with SET and Phishing Frenzy. By following the relevant frameworks and standards, such as OSI model, IEEE 802.11 standards, OWASP Top 10 framework, and NIST SP 800-115 framework, you can ensure a comprehensive assessment of the target system or network.

Pentesting is broadly done in 3 categories. 1- White box(Pentesters understands the system thoroughly and try to find the loopholes) 2- Black box(Done based on the real world scenarios where Pentesters are not provided with any kind of information about system) 3- Grey box(Sometime it's considered as White+Black, or Minimal understanding of the system) How it need to be done ? It depends on the scope. There are different set of standards or guidelines to test each kind of system. Eg- For application related Pentest, OWASP is the globally recognised standard. Similar NIST, CIS plays a vital role when it comes to Pentest based on security guidelines. Apart from the guidelines, Pentester's own experience and knowledge is a key in Pentest.

Planning: The scope, constraints, targets information(IPs, URLs), timeline, client contact info, types of attacks and methodology to be used have to be set prior to starting the pentesting. The ROE(Rules of Engagement) document is prepared for this purpose. The time is crucial to avoid unplanned disruptions. Usually DOS attacks are out of the scope.

3 What pen testing?

The final question you might face is what are some of the pen testing scenarios or projects you have worked on, and what were the results and outcomes. This is your chance to demonstrate your experience and skills in pen testing, as well as your ability to collaborate with others. You can discuss some of the pen testing scenarios or projects you have worked on, like internal or external pen testing, black box, gray box, or white box pen testing, web application, network, wireless, or social engineering pen testing, and pen testing for different industries or sectors. Moreover, you can explain the results and outcomes of your pen testing scenarios or projects such as the number and severity of vulnerabilities identified and exploited, the impact and risk level of the vulnerabilities on the system or network, the recommendations and mitigation strategies provided to the client or management, the feedback received from the client or management, and the remediation and retesting process followed or participated in. Pen testing is an essential skill for information security professionals that requires preparation and practice. By following these tips and best practices you can increase your chances of succeeding in your pen testing interview questions and impressing potential employers.

Il faut également bien prendre en compte qu'un test d'intrusion est un acte encadré et doit être contractuellement engagé entre le client qui souscrit au PenTest et la société qui réalise le PenTest. Le type de test doit être clairement explicité, sur quels environnement, a quelles dates/heures, le client doit être informé du début et de la fin des tests etc. Il est totalement interdit et juridiquement répréhensible de réaliser des PenTest sur des infrastructures clients, même public, sans l'accord des clients et des fournisseurs de services.
