1 What is inquiry-based learning?

It allows students to explore a topic or problem in depth and construct their own understanding and knowledge. Inquiry-based learning can take different forms and levels of guidance, depending on the goals, context, and learners involved. 2 Why use inquiry-based learning?

Inquiry-based learning can offer many benefits for both students and teachers, such as increasing motivation, developing critical thinking and research skills, and enhancing creativity and innovation. It can also foster collaboration and communication, support self-regulation and metacognition, facilitate deeper learning, and empower students to take ownership of their own learning. Students are driven by their own curiosity and passion as they have to formulate questions, gather and evaluate information, synthesize and communicate their findings, generate new ideas, experiment with different approaches, share perspectives, listen to feedback, plan and monitor their own learning process and outcomes, connect prior knowledge with new information and concepts, and make decisions that affect their learning journey.

The harsh reality is that, in the United States, we're in the midst of a time many schools are engaging in curricular violence that reflect the divisiveness rooted in the country's current sociopolitical climate. Depending on what state you're teaching in, you fighting any laws and policies that are censoring curriculum materials or specific ideological frameworks that are centering the experiences of historically marginalized communities. With that said, it's imperative that we have students engage in inquiry-based learning so that they build their criticality skills and come to their own informed conclusions on the diverse sources of information they're learning about and reviewing in the classroom.

Learning how to ask questions and listening to and interpreting the answers it critical to learning. However, in order to ask meaningful questions, students must have access to building knowledge through acquiring authentic information from a variety of viewpoints/perspectives.

Inquiry-based learning is reflective consciousness. Meaningful and active learning reflect part of our identities. We need to be aware and listen to ourselves, feedback practices, and others. Through this learning practice there must be cycles of communication and improvement.

3 How to implement inquiry-based learning?

Inquiry-based learning can be challenging to implement, especially if you are used to a more traditional or teacher-centered approach. However, there are some strategies and tips that can help you to plan and facilitate inquiry-based learning effectively. To start, use a hook or trigger that sparks students' curiosity and interest in the topic or problem. This could be a question, a scenario, a video, a story, or a demonstration. Additionally, scaffold and support students' inquiry process through providing clear expectations, guidelines, and feedback. Utilize tools such as rubrics, checklists, templates, or graphic organizers to help students organize their thoughts and plan their steps. Furthermore, encourage and model inquiry skills and habits of mind by asking open-ended and probing questions. You can also use prompts such as "What do you think?", "How do you know?", "What if?", or "Why does it matter?" to stimulate students' thinking and reflection. Additionally, create a collaborative and supportive learning environment by grouping students with diverse abilities and interests. Establish norms and rules for interaction as well as facilitate peer feedback and discussion. Lastly, assess and celebrate students' learning through multiple forms of assessment such as portfolios, presentations, or exhibitions. Involve students in self-assessment and peer-assessment as well as provide constructive feedback that highlights their strengths and areas for improvement.

Begin a new unit by asking the class to formulate questions they may have about the new topic. Organize the class into small groups to research and find the answers. Each group can prepare a way to display their findings in a poster, model, game or display.

There are many existing models and frameworks such as the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), and the 7E model which adds on an additional two Es of Elicit and Extend. However, in general, all approaches to inquiry-based teaching/learning involves three phases. The first phase involves formulating questions and initial understandings. The second phase involves exploration and analysis, while the third and final phase involves drawing conclusions. At the heart of it all however, is the focus on student agency and centricity, as well as on questions/questioning. Of course, with the recent advances in technology, such as with IoT and generative AI, there is room for more creativity and greater student empowerment in IBL.

4 What are the benefits of inquiry-based learning?

Inquiry-based learning can have positive impacts on students' learning outcomes and engagement, as well as on teachers' professional development and satisfaction. Some of the benefits include improved academic achievement and performance, increased confidence and self-efficacy, enhanced interest and enjoyment in learning, fostered lifelong learning and curiosity, enriched pedagogical repertoire and practice, and strengthened relationships with students, colleagues, and parents. Through inquiry-based learning, students can demonstrate higher levels of understanding, retention, and transfer of knowledge and skills; experience success and growth through their own efforts; pursue their own passions and questions; develop a positive attitude towards learning; experiment with different methods and strategies; engage in meaningful dialogue; and share their goals and visions.

Inquiry-based learning can present some challenges and difficulties for both students and teachers, such as needing more time, effort, and resources to plan and conduct open-ended investigations. It can also cause uncertainty, confusion, and frustration when dealing with ill-defined problems that may not have clear answers. Inquiry-based learning demands more skills, knowledge, and support to acquire and apply information from various sources. It can also create conflict, disagreement, and diversity when working with people of different opinions and backgrounds. Finally, it can challenge beliefs, assumptions, and practices by questioning one's own understanding of knowledge and accepting multiple viewpoints.

In my personal opinion, one of the greatest challenge of inquiry-based learning is that more often than not, the benefits on student learning may not be tangible and easily measurable. From my experiences, many students and teachers find that time set aside for inquiry-based learning may not be "cost-effective" and may thus shy away from IBL in favour of more direct instructional approaches. Moreover, the high-stakes national exams on which students are assessed may not necessarily favour the IBL pedagogy and approach. In fact, Professor John Sweller, an Australian educational psychologist?argued in a recent analysis paper under the Center for Independent Studies, that inquiry-based approaches harm student learning.
