Optimize data packet size - large packets use more power for a short time, small packets use less but transmit for longer. Choose power-efficient integrated radios that sleep completely when idle. And ensure the microcontroller sleeps between transmissions. The key is analyzing communication needs and matching them to the most power-efficient protocol for the job.

In my experience, many Iot devices are compact leaving much less room for battery capacity unless powered from an external source. Best practise must include understanding the data requirements to best adjusting polling to enable efficient duty cycles for better management of resources

At first, make sure to evaluate the expected energy sources in the environment where the device will be deployed. Is solar makes more sense or should you consider other energy harvesting option. You want to pick the right method for the conditions. Secondly, design the power management system with storage in mind. Batteries or supercaps can store excess harvested energy for when the ambient source is intermittent. This ensures the system keeps operating even if the harvesting output drops temporarily.

IT and ICT systems are used to devices being able to be pinged in the field. This is usually not possible with low power battery operated IoT devices. This required you to also rethink the server side of the equation. So queueing of configuration updates, over the air firmware updates or collection of logs and events needs to be able to wait for the device to check in. This also requires the device to check in regularly if you want it to be responsive. You have to take into consideration of battery protection. Such cases include, temporature. Heat, absolutely kills Li, batteries. Cold, reduces battery capacity to 1/2, or less, all types. Then, there's battery conditioning. Do not discharge to 0 volts. Smart chargers will ignor a completely dead battery and not charge. Do not over charge any battery. Doing so can be dangerous with leaks and, or explosions. Use rated current tripping devices, like circuit breakers and fuses. A shorted battery can start fires and explode as well. Not to mention the toxicity of battery contents. Bottom line, know your limit, and stay well within it.
