What is the value of business architecture in your organization?

Enterprise Architecture (EA) is a multifaceted discipline that extends beyond its technical roots. At its core, EA is a creative endeavor that requires the synthesis of business strategy, technology, and innovation to create a coherent blueprint for organizational success. But its significance goes far beyond mere technical acumen. Successful Enterprise Architects must fill many roles, showcasing their prowess as versatile communicators and skilled politicians, navigating the intricate web of organizational dynamics.

Based on Latin America's reality, EA is a strategic approach to managing and optimizing the complex systems and structures within organizations across the region. It helps in unique challenges as: 1. Cultural Diversity: EA enables organizations to bridge cultural gaps by fostering collaboration and communication between teams from different backgrounds. 2. Economic Variability: The region experiences economic fluctuations, and EA provides the agility needed to adapt to changing financial conditions, enabling organizations to optimize costs and investments. 3. Business architecture is essential for organizational clarity and alignment. I'd emphasize its role in providing a comprehensive view of how an organization operates and delivers value. An Enterprise Architecture is a framework for integration of business activity for an organization. Such integration is based on the exchange of information between actors / teams undertaking the activity on behalf of the organization. Modern EA can be seen as having two sides - business (defines the activity) and IT (enables the info. flow). That information flow happens over distance, in real time and over extended periods of time. To enable the latter EA is concerned with record keeping - sometimes over decades. An Enterprise Architecture practice / team in an organization creates this EA based on an analysis of strategy, plans & operations, presents it / explains it to "stakeholders" & ensures change projects comply with it.

Business architecture describes how a business works, regardless of how it is supported by technology. In the past, enterprise architecture practices focused primarily on the technological aspects of change. However, EA has evolved and is now a multifaceted discipline that extends beyond its technical roots. It provides a holistic view of the entire organization, including its business architecture, IT architecture, and data architecture. It ensures that all of these components are aligned and working together to achieve the organization's goals.

Business Architecture is an "Architecture Domain" in EA. Others are: Data/Info, IT Applications & IT Infrastructure with some variations depending on framework. An Architecture Domain is simply a view point on the system being architected (in this case, the enterprise - seen as an activity system). Core of the business domain is a definition of the business activity. That can be in the form of a process or capability map or otherwise. Typically though the Business Domain also includes descriptive text to present the whole EA to business stakeholders and link it to their concerns e.g. the strategy and business plans. Related are "business domain architects" who cover the whole EA for a business area like Sales.

The benefit comes from having a single definition of the business across all areas / domains of the business and irrespective of IT. This is preferable to having the business depicted only as context for the IT (a typical IT Architecture approach) as it avoids the possibility of disconnects / gaps / overlaps between contexts of seperate IT systems. This approach is also more easily exensible so that other views of the business - which are unconcerned with information flows & IT - can be incorporpated (even when they might be considered more Business Analysis than Architecture).

Minha experiência mostrar que encontrar um bom Sponsor para a iniciativa de arquitetura empresarial será fundamental, assim como, identificar e engajar stakeholders como escritório de projetos, área de planejamento estratégico, seguran?a da informa??o, seguran?a corporativa, riscos e compliance e escritório de processos. Estas áreas de negócio e stakeholders ser?o fundamentais e precisam estar convencidos sobre os benefícios que a arquietura empresarial terá em suas áreas e para toda a empresa.

Baseado na minha experiência existem dois grandes desafios. O primeiro está relacionado a percep??o de valor sobre a contribui??o estratégica da arquitetura empresarial, muitas vezes a arquitetura é vista como uma área burocrática e lenta. Por este motivo, minhas implementa??es de arquitetura empresarial, consiste em buscar um modelo ágil focado em resultados de negócio e gera??o de valor para os principais stakeholders. Com base na minha experiência, o segundo desafio está relacionado a encontrar profissionais com a experiência e habilidades necessárias. Existem diversos frameworks de arquitetura empresarial, entretanto temos que considerar que a execu??o da arquitetura dependerá das pessoas, que precisam ser treinadas continuamente.

A arquitetura empresarial precisa ser implementada nas empresas como uma área estratégica e geradora de projetos de inova??o e transforma??o digital. Seu papel deverá ser de facilitadora, conectando as necessidades de negócio à solu??es de tecnologia da informa??o. Seu papel consiste em capturar da organiza??o seus principais componentes e recursos e mostrar como estes est?o interligados para entregar valor a cliente final.
