What are the top strategies to prepare for an R&D performance evaluation?

The Order of activities in my opinion should be 1) goal setting to ensure that the R&D targets are aligned to the company's short and long term goals. Having SMART goals certainly helps but should have strong emphasis on measurable innovation! Goals should include values dear to the company.2) self evaluation against the set goals 3) performance evaluation with your manager that involves open discussion & feedback. A good evaluation can reduce the cynicism often associated with such processes. Steps 2 & 3 should be done quarterly or half yearly. The performance evaluation system should be part of the overall R&R system that tracks the overall performance of individuals over the years while grooming talent for greater responsibilities!

In my experience I find it valuable to seek feedback at regular intervals rather than wait for the project closeout. Having constructive conversations during the project can sometimes lead to a course correction when things may be starting to veer off track, saving a project from derailing and maintaining delivery expectations.

I recommend using a video camera; even the camera on your pc will work, anything that will display large enough to catch your hand and body movement. Listen to your orations, work to eliminate joiners such as; like, umm, ahh…etc. You’ll recognize them during your playback. The more you practice, review, present again. One other thing is to watch your time; more than likely your presentation will move forward faster than planned. Don’t be afraid of moving but do it with a purpose, move in a manner that is intended to involve the entire room. Make eye contact with all levels of your audience.
