What are the top skills for environmental engineers?

I would add one very important skill a good Environmental Engineer has to bring to the table in addtion to : Analytical skills including applying mathematical and scientific concepts, such as chemistry, physics, biology, and statistics...... APPLY COMMON SENSE. 50% of good env. engineering is knowledge, experience, expertise. The other 50 % is simple Common sense.

"GAP ANALYSIS". Environment is very complex subject which requires multidisciplinary approach. No one is perfectly competent in environmental science. So, if you know the "Gap", you can do micro analysis for particular subject.

The most important ability, especially if a project manager, is the ability to passionately express the objectives of your work to both clients and the general public that would benefit from the project.

There are some common/general skills which every Engineer must possess for successful and satisfactory performance. As Analytical skills, problem solving skills, good communication skills, critical thinking, team work and so on. But there are some specific skills that are mandatory for Environmental Engineer like, technical skills and knowledge of the subject, passion for Environmental conservation, Adaptability with weather conditions, command over Environmental local and international regulations, multidisciplinary knowledge, love for nature and many more.

Expect the best but be prepared for the worst. Always think worse case scenario in daily activities. Often, the effectiveness of other skills discussed here is diminished if one cannot convey the project findings cannot clearly. In my experience, many civil and environmental engineers lack strong technical writing skills, which significantly impacts their overall performance. If you want to improve your writing skills, you should to two things: (1) take writing classes and (2) read books.

Very important skill as an engineer. Technical writing, preparing specifications, is something I am still learning. I am very grateful for my seniors who have red lined my reports and helped immensely in improving my writing. As a consultant, one thing I have noticed is to be able to navigate your communication with different audience, such as regulators, client or if you are talking to non-technical people.

As an entry to mid level environmental engineer I have learnt, that having project management skills is equally important as your technical skills. Understanding project budget, billability and be able to optimize your time working on a project is essential.

I think it is important to differentiate skills and expertise. Sustainability is expertise for environmental engineers, not a skill. Skills, once acquired, like riding a bike, don't necessarily require continuous improvement. Expertise, such as sustainability for environmental engineers, needs ongoing development and refinement to stay relevant and effective. It's this blend of foundational engineering skills, acquired non-engineering skills, such as technical writing, and evolving expertise, that truly defines a successful engineering career.
