What are the top performance metrics for Process Design professionals?

In any field or discipline, aligning performance metrics with financial and operational outcomes ensures that we, as professionals, are contributing directly to the company's success and bottom line. This is included for process design professionals. Measure the financial return generated by process design initiatives compared to the investment made. A positive ROI indicates effective utilization of resources. Additionally, quantify the direct cost savings achieved through process optimizations consider the costs avoided by preventing inefficiencies or errors.

Agree this is a strong metric and reflects speed and efficiency. Disagree that it reflects effectiveness. Effectiveness is associated with meeting key customer requirements on the output. Typically measures of cycle time are not just start to finish of larger processes but within key steps of the process including handoffs to understand which part of a process and roles needs the most focus to reduce the overall cycle time.

By analyzing how different cost components are affected by a process, such as materials, labor, and rework, you can uncover incredible opportunities for optimization and resource allocation. With this knowledge, you can make changes that will result in significant cost savings, allowing you to invest those resources back into your business. So, don't shy away from identifying areas that require optimization - embrace the challenge and take action to streamline your processes and reduce costs. Your business will thrive as a result!

Based on my experience in the defense and government public sector, any cost reduction is a win-win - lower or higher. Cost reductions need to be considered in the bigger picture and not just another measure. For instance, a lower cost reduction could be the best result from optimizing the process. It doesn't necessarily reflect inefficiencies or waste are still present in the process. What if the lower cost reduction is from an already optimized process? Is the low cost reduction a "bad sign"? Might just be the best possible reduction, even if it's low. On the flip side, applying this same logic, a higher cost reduction could still reflect high inefficiencies, redundancies, or waste in the process.

Achieving success requires diligence in identifying and minimizing errors. By reducing errors, we can improve operational efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance the quality of our output. we should prioritize error reduction in our daily activities to ensure a smooth and productive workflow.

Having lower error rate is the goal for every process designer. It can be achieved by capturing as much information as possible in the critical steps of the process so that there is least ambiguity. Also efficiently rate the weightage of every particular information captured to ensure precision of outcome.

Innovation around offerings that meet evolving or unmet customer needs is critical for demand generation and competing in the market. So I don’t consider this internal if directly related to meeting external customer requirements. Internal processes meeting key stakeholder requirements effectively and efficiently to me is enough, rate of process innovation would seem to drive process changes for sake of process change.

What about companies that have a Goal of X percent of Sales coming from Products introduced within the last Y years? Is that an Innovation Rate goal that is too internally focused? Or is there some greater good, bigger goal being served, by this metric?

I want to know if a process if first effective and then to do that in the most efficient way. Something about this metric seems too internally focused … if a process is effective and efficient, why do I need to know how often it changes? I do want to know if customer requirements change and a process isn’t as effective and needs changed or if we have cost saving opportunities to make processes more efficient, but not to change for sake of change. Maybe I am missing something here but seems this metric is focused on something different than the other metrics. It costs time and money to measure and report and chase a metric…is this one worth it?

One additional performance metrics to consider is the measure of "outcomes" or "results" obtained from the processes. What are the capabilities I expect to receive from the process? What are the services? This type of measure would indicate the "effectiveness" of the process. This is a key measure to public sector clients in the department of defense; federal, state and local governments; non-profit organizations; and education.
