What are the top negotiation tactics to avoid when evaluating a job offer?

Don’t accept the first offer on the spot, as you don’t want to show desperation. If you receive a verbal offer, stay silent for a bit as though you are thinking about it. If the other person does not jump back in after an uncomfortable pause with some feedback, state that you would like time to think it over and ask how long they can wait for an answer. It might insinuate that you have another offer brewing or on the table. Make a counteroffer when you get back to them, and be able to back it up with research you have done on salaries in your locale. If the counteroffer base salary is non-negotiable, are other benefits negotiable? Everything should be put in writing.

There are really two parts to this: Part A) you don’t accept the first offer because the company will always expect you to counter. They have proposed a salary package with the expectation that there will need to be some wiggle room Part B) the reasoning behind Part A Strategy is set out in the opening statement While I don’t agree that accepting a first offer is a sign that you are “desperate”, it is a sign that you might be undervaluing yourself or not know your market worth People are often fearful that any attempt to negotiate will be viewed poorly, to the extent that the Company withdraws their offer. But if the company is of that ilk, better to know now & feel relieved that you have avoided working in such a toxic culture!

Remember to evaluate every offer completely. Ask yourself if you have ALL the information to make an informed decision. Usually you do not and you will need to go back to the employer to get further information on benefits, bonus programs, etc. Make sure you are able to evaluate the offer from a monetary standpoint before you negotiate anything.

The first thing I recommend my clients to do is think carefully if this is the right option for them. Often our egos can be flattered by an offer and override our intuition which may be trying to tell us something important about whether we should accept or not. Once you are sure it is right for you, be clear about what the market value for the role is and for what you to offer. Negotiation is an elegant dance when done well. Have a figure in mind of how much you are happy to settle for and a higher figure which would be your ideal outcome. Ask for the higher figure first and provide a sound rationale to support your argument. Asking for more than you would happily settle for increases the likelihood of a good outcome for all.

One common mistake is immediately accepting the first offer. This might convey desperation or a lack of awareness of your market value. Instead, express appreciation for the offer and request time to consider it. Use this period to research industry standards and prepare a counteroffer. Remember, negotiation is a standard part of the hiring process, and most employers expect it.

Don't shy away from negotiating! You're almost always expected to negotiate, so do so! If you're not in work, it's easy to be 'too keen', and fall into the trap of failing to negotiate. Don't forget to do your homework! I am always surprised when a candidate hasn't got much of an idea of the market rate for the job and their skill set within it. Don't look at base salary alone! Look at an offer holistically - I know that for many of us base salary is really important, but also consider the full value of what they're offering you and ask how it compares to others at similar levels. Ask about the history of bonus payouts as well.

When considering a new role, avoid ultimatums or accusing tones which damage relationships. See negotiations as collaborative problem-solving between parties with different goals as well.

We all carry our past experiences, both good and bad, which will easily cloud our minds when making good decisions when considering any offers. It's often a mistake to be too emotionally affected due to a recent downfall and jump from one hole to another.

HR remembers the not-so-polite candidates. They may not let you know during the discussion but trust me - don't ruin your reputation as a professional before you even start in a role.

As a professional, you should know your values (KSAs) and the job market inside and out. This way you will come across as confident when you make your additional ask. Also, know what you will and won't comprise rather than having an all-or-nothing approach to a job that might be the right stepping stone for your career long term.

Your due diligence about the salary range and benefits is critical for your success in the negotiation. Nothing beats being well-informed about the market and your position within it. Be sure to prepare three scenarios of salary and benefits: the first where you will be able to meet your fixed costs and expenses within your lifestyle and obligations, the second where you would have some flexibility with variable costs and expenses, and the third which would represent a significant increase in salary and benefits. Keep in mind advantages such as less commuting time, flexible schedules, and learning and development opportunities, and monetize them whenever possible as you prepare your three scenarios.

Understand that this ‘tactic’ goes both ways. Be realistic. If your qualifications don’t match all (or most) of the basic or preferred requirements of the job posting, you may get a lower salary offer. The more qualified and prepared you are, the more bargaining power you have. And start by assessing YOUR values and the org’s! If they don’t align, then even those high dollar signs aren’t worth the cost of bad org culture.

Knowing your worth and being prepared with examples of impressive contributions that demonstrate your worth is key. Also key is to come prepared with a list of non-monetary benefits you can ask for (if the offer is low). Sometimes it's not just about the money.

Making false claims might get you the job. But then it's not really you that's receiving the offer. In my early career, I could sell myself into most positions if given an interview. I once exaggerated my skill level and, later, in the job, found myself ill-equipped to excel and get the job done properly. That led to stress, decreased confidence, and a lot more hours at work. If you don't have skills, rather than pretend, you may consider steering the interviewer towards your skills and experience that most relate to the ones they say they want. Then demonstrate your ability to learn and adapt. This way they will trust you, you will know what you are getting yourself into, and it might just all work out! Go get 'em!

Asking questions is the most critical part of negotiations when it comes to a job. Because the package is not just about the money and benefits. Verbal offers can be great. They can also mean nothing if not written and confirmed in an actual document signed by the employer. If you are extended a verbal offer, PLEASE ask for an official, written copy. If they hem and hah over the request, run fast. This is a basic request that every employer should have no problem. with.

Be realistic - since you applied for the position, read the job description carefully. Some people try to "wing it" and think if they can in the interview they can negotiate some things that weren't even on the table. Take interviews and negotiations seriously. This is your life and career so be prepared with real questions so you are not blindsided later.

From the time of your first conversation with a someone screening your background when they ask, "How much are you looking for," they are negotiating. You don't know anything about the job or who you'll be working for but they want to tie you down to a number. It is important to defer and deflect when answering. If pressured, tell them, "I only know what I've read or been told. I haven't met anyone yet or heard the reality of the role and expectations yet. I can give you a number but until I know more, I'm not committed to it. Can we have another conversation after that?" Does that sound unreasonable? It is their need for certainty when you have little information that is unreasonable. Stop being so compliant.

Research, research, research, and be prepared to sit at the negotiation table. Be professional, likeable, and maintain clarity and perspective. Create a strategy, practice, and stick to it.

Focus on interests, not positions; seek first to understand others while ensuring your own needs are also met. Negotiation is an ongoing process.

As a hiring manager - do not choose a job that you have not fully understood/ explored or do not enjoy because of the pay or opportunity! Replay the expectations that were listed in the interviews. Ask yourself if this is what you really want and if you can fit into the company culture and role the job covers!
