What are the top 3D printers for creating high-resolution models and prototypes?

Hands down SLA. Precise, prints complex and intricate features and give you a good finish that doesn't require sanding or filing or coating for smoother finish. I've printed parts for mechanisms, jewelry, dental applications, models and figurines, biomedical guides, etc and SLA always gives top notch results.

Basic for plastic printing is always FDM. Get an FDM printer cheap, and make your first experience. You can use finer nozzles to create models with higher resolutions. However, you will never get a surface as smooth as with a resin printer. And these can also be quite affordable. SLS (or other powder based) printing is another alternative with rather smooth surfaces. But the printers are in general more expensive.

When job profile is not so intricate then FDM is a gem. Though, some minute details are not going to be delivered in this system. The skill required to operate the FDM is also of a normal level, which make the job even less costlier.

FDM is the most cost efficient and effective printer for prototyping purposes. I would put this on the top when looking at things from a prototyping perspective. While it may not do as well in terms of resolution compared to other printers, the print quality is underestimated when operated in the right hands.

SLS is probably the best when it comes to manufacturing process. Of course it will depend on the application, but when it comes to “real” manufacturing, SLS is the right technology. For fine detail processes, I can only think of one machine: EOS P110 FDR. The “FDR” is for “Fine Detail Resolution”, and it can really make incredible things. There is no competition here.
