4 Best practices for composting

To ensure a successful and safe composting process and product, it is important to follow some best practices. Firstly, you should use a balanced mix of carbon-rich materials (such as leaves, straw, paper, or wood chips) and nitrogen-rich materials (such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings, or manure). Avoid materials that can attract pests, cause odors, or spread diseases (e.g. meat, dairy, fats, oils, bones, pet waste, or diseased plants). Secondly, you should maintain a proper temperature (between 40 and 60 degrees Celsius), moisture (between 40 and 60 percent), aeration (by turning or mixing your compost), and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (between 25:1 and 30:1). Monitor and adjust these conditions regularly with the tools and technologies available. Thirdly, use the appropriate methods for your composting system and goals (such as hot or cold composting, batch or continuous composting, or aerobic or anaerobic composting) following the instructions for your specific system. Lastly, use your compost for suitable purposes such as improving soil structure/fertility/water retention or enhancing plant growth/health/yield. Test your compost for quality and safety before applying it at the right time and rate depending on the type of soil/plant/crop.

Vermicomposting bins use worms to accelerate the decomposition of organic waste, producing high-quality compost known as worm castings. We integrated vermicomposting bins into our green building’s waste management system. This method was particularly effective for kitchen waste, producing nutrient-rich compost that we used for our rooftop vegetable garden, resulting in a 20% increase in vegetable yield Mechanical compost aerators can be used to regularly aerate compost piles, ensuring adequate oxygen supply for aerobic decomposition. We utilised a manual compost aerator to turn our outdoor compost heaps. This regular aeration maintained optimal microbial activity and reduced the composting time by 30%, yielding high-quality compost faster.
