What techniques can you use to manage and prioritize test cases in Agile testing methodologies?

In Agile testing, use techniques like MoSCoW prioritization to categorize test cases into Must-haves, Should-haves, Could-haves, and Won't-haves. Employ risk-based testing, focusing on critical areas first. Also, use exploratory testing for rapid, on-the-fly evaluations based on real-time feedback. These methods help in efficient test case management and prioritization.

General Prioritization : In this type of prioritization, test cases that will be useful for the subsequent modified versions of product are prioritized. It does not require any information regarding modifications made in the product. Risk – based Prioritization : This technique uses risk analysis to identify potential problem areas which if failed, could lead to bad consequences. Therefore, test cases are prioritized keeping in mind potential problem areas. Requirements – based Prioritization : Some requirements are more important than others or are more critical in nature, hence test cases for such requirements should be prioritized first.

Test cases should always been managed from a central repository - usually this will be an ALM like JIRA, or a tool like TestRail. Spreadsheets, while a tempting and seemingly simple way to manage test cases become very hard to manage at any sort of scale - keeping the sheets of multiple team members and teams in sync becomes impossible

In addition to ranking your testing efforts according to risk, requirements or other sequencing that makes sense for you and your product, I find it can be helpful to signify what you won’t be testing and what the possible consequences of that choice is as well. Using the formulation: There is a risk that XYZ, we have chosen to avoid/accept/mitigate/delegate said risk because ABC reasons in such and such a way, therefore no testeffort will be spent on this risk. BTW the same formulation is useful for the risks you do choose to put testeffort into.

One of my favorite tools is Allpairs created by James Bach (and still available on line). When dealing with the interaction of several fields that each have multiple options (think 5 dropdown fields with 4 options each) so you have an unwieldy amount of tests (in this example 1024 unique combinations). A tool like this helps you evaluate the combinations to get the maximum value from the test cases you have resources to execute. The data the All Pairs provides allows you to plan the test scenarios that get you to the coverage desired. It won't be everything, but the team is able to make an informed decision about what is enough.

Defintely review your testcases and walkthroughs and paired testing sessions are great ways to do this. Do also remember to regularly review testcases continued value. Particularly as systems age and automated testcases accumulate, review which tests are candidates to be archived or even deleted. Avoit bloated testsuites by pruning your testcases.

In general, test cases should be outcome-based, focusing on the expected behavior and the behaviors that trigger it. As much as possible, these tests should be data driven, and use permutations to cover the overall testing area. Once written, test cases should be placed into a central repository where they can be grouped into suites (smoke, regression, etc) and managed. As the application is updated, test cases should be updated/deprecated as needed to ensure these suites always accurately describe the application and the test cases remain valuable.
