What techniques can you use to ensure the success of your video production projects?

In my experience the most important part of any production is the pre production process. You can identify challenges, situations, delays, and have a plan B if necessary. A good pre production guarantees a great production. Planning ahead for a great and easy execution.

Communicate with learning your clients goals, audience and details of content. Client have the big picture, you need to learn it too.

One thing to ensure a successful project is proper planning. I sketch how my set will look like and even use 3d simulation softwares like set a light to have a look at my scenes even before production. Secondly, you have to identify the tools you will be needing and prepare backup equipments in case of any damage or loss. Lastly, The client is key, show your sketches and use a common language to explain to the client how the story is going to be . Thank you.

Manage client and your crews expectations. Highly recommend deciding on contingencies if Plan A,B, or C, does work out according to plan. Clients change their minds so be ready and whenever possible have a "PreMortem" conversation with your team about how to address unforeseen circumstances. This will lead to a much smoother production and corresponding post-production.

I always ask my team to start with the Why. What is the raison d'etre for telling the story. When your story has a reason for being, then you can decided who you want to tell it to. The 'who' this exists for, then determines your how. For me here in flows the creative flow of your production plan.

Time is a very important criteria these days, try to concentrate the content and make your video production as short as possible in order to compete with hundred thousands of items produced each day!

Some people work exceedingly well with a detailed script and a teleprompter. Others simply need bullet points so they can let their passion shine through. Typically your name will be around the video or in the ad so that wastes time and more people will not continue watching. The first 5 seconds are critical to your story. With so much content out there, the first visual, the first sound, the first word need to hook your viewer in with the promise of what they are in this for. Why must they invest the next 5 min, 10 min, 20 min watching your video. Sometimes when we start scripting and storyboarding we get lost in the creative and we forget our why. The hook, the intro however creative needs to hold attend from the first minute as you do your intro, set up and lead the viewer to the climax.

Schedule communication. It's important to communicate how long a change to the edit may take. It's best to have a google doc with a very specific requirements list as well as a "word story-board' in which you list, in chronological order, when and where scenes and graphics will be happening. This will ensure you don't have to go back and fix as many things in your edit.

Learn how to fix bad audio and video. Often times you might be in a rush while shooting something. This is especially so when it comes to interviewing staff or workers as their time is valuable and limited. Because of this time constraint, you're bound to have messy audio and rushed video. A few things that can help fix these problems, that I've used extensively, are: Shoot in quiet areas Shoot in rooms with strong overhead lights or a lot of windows Put your camera on 'auto' setting Use adobe podcast's ai voice enhancer (works most of the time) Understand color grading and compositing to tweak certain areas of your video. Chromatic aberration, camera lens blur, and sharpen (After Effects) can all help hide and clean up a poorly shot video

First off, the content of the video is WAY more important than how "good" it looks. But a bad location/equipment can ruin good content. I prepare for unpredictable recording sessions with contingencies. As they say, 2 is 1, and 1 is none. Use a boom mic AND a lapel mic. If you capture two versions of audio, you have options in post. Bring extension cords and your own light if possible. Nothing crazy, but being able to supplement existing light is HUGE! And have a heavy blanket. Hanging a heavy blanket can control bad lighting and reduce bad sound in an area. As another writer mentioned, we need to develop the skill of fixing things in post. But I also want to eliminate as many variables as possible before post-production.

Yes, best example is drone piloting. When reading the rules correctly they can make or break your flight path on day of shooting. make sure your flight path is free from any type of air restrictions, or you must be able to apply for exemption at least 90 days in advanced.

In my experience in corporate video, you don't often get a choice of location and you have to make the most of what is presented, and quite often, it's not great. My biggest tip is to invest in good and varied lighting, and don't forget the extras. Reflectors, blackout curtains, diffusion sheets can help to shape light and make your subject look great. Don't be afraid to turn off the lights! Expose your camera for the room before you turn on your key light, that way you can try to avoid making your background too dark or overexposing a window (although if you don't have enough lighting this might not be possible!). Always keep in mind your vision might not always be a reality and you will need to adapt quickly with what you have with you.

Most often, it works the other way. The director absorbs the screenwriter's effort and develops their concepts and innovations. As a writer, I develop the story but never advise shot selections, camera angles, and suchlike. That is the director's prerogative. My job would be to write as compelling a story as I can conceive. By the way, a writer is never happy till the shoot happens! Change is constant.

Study and learn why they exist, the rules and principles behind it. It's how our minds visually see and understand. Then practice. It's important this becomes instinctive as you get better with your craft of filmmaking and storytelling.

It's nice to be creative while telling a story, or producing a instructional video. However, make sure the main message isn't being obscured through your style of instruction, or story telling.

With editing, it's important to consider the space, whether virtual or physical, where your audience will be viewing the content; a pop-up ad requires a different pace than a gala video, and a Instagram reel requires a different pace than a YouTube video. So consider the pace at which people are "moving" in each space, and what viewers are expecting to experience. That will help inform the editing style and pace your video should have.

A few easy editing tips: 1. Snap in and out by magnifying up to 30% 2. When you snap in and out keep the eyes in the same place because this helps people process it as the same clip smoothly, and 3. Always color correct especially if you are using more than one camera.

Editing the story should follow much of what you planned in the beginning. If you've done your work, this will save time. You don't want the edit or finished visuals to distract from the story you're telling. The edit is there to tell the story and engage the viewer.

I talked about this with regard to cameras and locations, but it’s also true with editing: I have an editor that’s, imho, the best and I trust him implicitly. Yes, I have my own ideas about how I see the project, but he’s a storyteller, too. So I don’t interfere with his process. I let him “do his thing” and am often (almost always) thrilled with the results. Is it exactly what I had in mind? Not always. Will he change it? Yes, if I have a sequence that I have a very specific idea about. But often what he does is just more interesting than what I had in mind. Again, that is the process of collaboration.

I agree with most of what’s been written here, but as a producer there’s one final step I recommend. During the pre-production process I will literally visualize the entire day, step by step. I imagine crew parking, equipment unloading, breakfast, hair and makeup… everything. I try to go through the entire day in my mind and find the pieces that may have been forgotten. There is so much to plan for a shoot day, but the process of visualizing the day, detail by detail, allows me to find problems before they happen, and gives me a moment of calm - an “I got this moment” - before the shoot day starts.

The most important pillar in making video project is the planning , without planning you cannot succeed in producing a content with right outcome.

This is my personal technique: A while ago, someone described me in a way that really captured what I've done in my career as a media producer and I'd love to share it and suggest it, also. A colleague said something like this: "Rossy sees the final product in her mind before the first shot is done". And I do this, by analyzing properly during research and development, before the content creation, and then through a great teamwork on pre-production, production, and post-production. Staying true to your vision and focusing on meticulous planning, teamwork, selecting the proper equipment, attention to detail, and of course adapting when needed, is one of the ways you can ensure the success of your video production projects.

A helpful practice I've developed for myself is to create a safe cushion for the delivery date of the product, and to provide deadlines for each new cut/version of the video, but not the final product, especially for clients who are not familiar with the post-production process and how time-consuming it could be, especially with incorporating feedback that alters the substance of the video. As I just told a friend yesterday, it's important to walk the client through each segment of the video explaining how your expertise informed each decision in the cut. It's critical to own and demonstrate expertise and control the framing of the feedback session. Otherwise, you'll constantly be revising the video.

The problem with film production is there are so many types of production and requirements. For some, you may have lots of time to plan and to work with your client in pre-production and plan meticulously. For other productions, you may not be so fortunate and you have to turn up and film on the go, but always keep in mind that you still need to impress the client with the end product. My biggest advice with these types of productions is to stick to the basics and get your sequences with a WS, MS and a CU. If it's an interview led make sure you've got the answers you need to fit the client's brief and don't be afraid to go back over questions you've asked before. Some interviewees take some warming up before they give solid answers!
