What strategies can you use to translate large documents like manuals or reports?

Then, after all this planning work, you start to put in motion your plan.

As an ex-PM myself, I was used to do the following to deal with large projects: 1. Recognize difficulties and problems which could arise from the document size. 2. Ask one of the collaborators to prepare a main glossary ahead of the beginning of the project. 3. Find the best collaborators to take the job. 4. Do a continuous follow-up of the project progress . 5. Define partial deliveries during the project, leaving time to unforeseen events. I think that's one good way to ensure a successful handling of a large project.

As part of planning ahead, it is also a good idea to work out your productivity by looking at the number of words you can translate vs hours you're able to work on the project. It will give you a good indication of what pace you can apply and how long the project will take you to do.

A note of warning, however. CAT Tools need to be meticulously mastered for them to be efficiently and effectively used. The translator should not allow CAT Tools to master them. CAT tools help you reproduce the formatting from the source document, but translators should always check the final documents to make sure no bugs affected the target text during conversion.

The benefits of large translation projects handled by a smaller pool of translators or even one translator are multiple: consistency and coherence for the project, effective project management and increased income for the translator etc. We need to understand that translation technology facilitates the translation process and should not be used as an excuse for low prices.

On a substantial project it's more than ever important to keep in touch with the client throughout so that any translation problems can be ironed out at an early stage.
