Keep the scripts as modular as possible. But make sure they are meaningful and logical. This will help is maintaining the scripts when there is regular new releases. As other experts have mentioned keeping the data separated from test scripts is not a choice. It has to be separate. This gives automation the advantage of running thousands of combination. If the scripts are modular and data is parameterised then you also will have a hybrid test framework. Hybrid FW is a combination of Keyword driven and data driven FW. These are the best ones for easy maintenance of functional tests

Agreed. This concept works very well. I have added my view about Hybrid framework in the first section of this article. Infact choosing the right framework is the first thing I would do. That will give the flexibility to make the code modular.
