CoE (Center of Excellence) or CoC (Center of Competence) in a division / organization is centered at enhancing a particular Knowledge/Skill and Technology helps in innovation and creativity. During team formation for achieving a Goals and Vision, individuals from various CoC or CoE are brought in to a team, to encourage diversity. So collective Intelligence can foster achievable E2E result. During this process of evaluating such Innovation and creative ideas. Steps should be taken to Appreciate, Respect and Hear each individual team member. Value their contribution, collaboration and collective learning. Give them enough free space to experiment, absorb cost of rework.

By now, this should be a reflex action, for if it's not, you need to take a serious look at yourself and your organization, as anything less should be in the dustbin of history. Innovation and Creativity cannot happen in captivity and an authoritative environment. There has to be an environment of freedom, trust, support and flexibility to rework. If there is rework, of course, project timeline and costs will breach. In such situations, competitor might over-take, but Management and Sales should support the team, think of aspects like MVP (Minimum Vaible Product) to start with market along with sharing product roadmap. In such situations, reducing team size will give wrong indication. Set different perspective, feeling of dejection and sense of failure, etc. Might result in further damage of attrition. Adding to burn-out situation. This is a wrong situation risking program's goals and organization's Vision.

Leaders are present when they should be, and not looking over shoulders. You have to set the tone for this early, ensuring your people are well-trained and have the tools and resources they need in all facets of your work, and make it a part of your daily routine. Your people should work individually and together without you present, only adding a bit of guidance and supervision as necessary.

A team lead has to know when to direct, coach, mentor, support, get own hands dirty or replace a team member in the interest of a project. While complete autonomy to team members are the ideal scenario, we may need to intervene for course correction a few times during the project. This intervention needs to be non intrusive and help the recepient learn and improve on the missing skills identified.

Of course, IPR and Patents aspects should be taken care. Employees should be educated of IPR, Patents and other associated aspects.

I'd be loathe to 'reward' it per se, but rather aim for ensuring that innovation and creativity are woven into the fabric of the team - at every touchpoint. If you - the boss - are the facilitator, your team will implicitly or explicitly bring ideas that appease you - not the problem or challenge at hand. Ensure your team is well versed in the ways of divergent and convergent thinking and that the rules of brainstorming/ideation are enforced (e.g. don't let loud voices drown out quiet ones).

Digital did a study and found that most significant technical innovations were made by people around the age of 27. Its important for the team to recognize and foster the younger teammates who can bring a fresh perspective to innovation. Senior members can leverage their experience and provide a supportive environment for innovation to actualize itself. But they are the experts of the status quo and should be open to disruptive approachs that end up as game changers. In that respect, innovation is disruptive to the conventional methods and systems but that is ok in this environment and should be absolutely encouraged. A well-balanced team who shares perspectives is capable of doing what is otherwise incapable of being done.

When leaders make innovation a part of their mission, and instill in their people the value thereof, it becomes that same reflex action. They won't do it for points or to get noticed, rather, they will do it because they want to do it.
