In order to enable a holistic view, there must be a crystal-clear definition of what the efficiency being measured refers to: 1. Where is the system boundary and what interactions with neighboring systems are there? 2. The reference period must be set in a meaningful way. When a system is operated stationary, it usually runs under optimal conditions and with maximum efficiency. But energy is also consumed during routine operational interruptions (repairs, inspections, etc.). A suitable design of the components involved leads to a reasonable timing of the interruptions and their combination. This increases the period of operation with maximum efficiency. However, selective measurement of efficiency during normal operation is not meaningful.
