A leader should help in improving the performance of the team member by training & development, providing resources, on-line training sessions, team discussions, regular feedback, coaching and offering suggestions & solutions. The aim should be to improve the performance of the team member and develop the team member, and not just list out areas of improvement required. Only then is the leader actually a good leader!

If however, no progress is made after a few efforts to coach and improve, it can become more difficult and performance management plans can be used to progress through to capability if required or your disciplinary procedure.

The supervisor should also take a hard look at the type of work required of the team member. Is s/he not performing because the work is so boring?
