The main intention of pre-prod is to remove unnecessary variables and focus the narrative. We can't possibly tell all stories at once, so figuring out what we're NOT going to say goes a long way in keeping scope tight. The challenge lies in balancing collaborative and story-appropriate ideas from creative minds with the limits of resources, and with awareness and respect for everyone's roles. So get all your best ideas together, but be prepared to let them go at the drop of a hat. Sometimes lesser ideas beat better ideas just because they're within scope.

"Why do we do pre-production?" Simply put, pre-production is the foundation of the house. The root-bed of the forest. The blueprints, the outline, the plan. It doesn't often contain great detail. It might be more function than form. It might be impenetrable or uninteresting for a general public who isn't interested or aware of the process of creating film and animation, (and rightly so. If everyone knew what was behind it, no-one would watch it). But. Pre-production contains the seeds of the tree that will grow. All aspects of a project spring forth from pre-production, expanding on it, and ideally never losing creativity and ideas, only adding to them. So why do pre-prod? To identify our visions and make them into reality.
