What I always tell junior data analyst during job interviews and throughout their first years at work is to focus on data manipulation. If you are impatient and want to start modelling or using the data first, you will soon feel the limitation of poor data handling skills. For example, focusing on data parsing and writing clean and well documented code for a few years is by no means at loss comparing to designing and training advanced deep learning models. In fact, it is comparably easy to train a well documented pre-canned model than handcrafting and analysing the input and output data. A sound knowledge of Python and basics of Excel should be enough nowadays.
