Vector shapes are versatile and scalable graphics that you can use to create logos, icons, illustrations, and more in Adobe Illustrator. In this article, you will learn the basic steps to creating a vector shape in Illustrator, from drawing the outline to applying colors and effects.
The first step is to draw the outline of your shape using the Pen tool, the Pencil tool, or the Shape tool. You can find these tools in the toolbar on the left side of the screen. To draw a straight line with the Pen tool, click once to create an anchor point, then click again where you want the line to end. To draw a curved line, click and drag to create a direction handle, then click and drag again to adjust the curve. To draw a freeform shape with the Pencil tool, click and drag on the artboard. To draw a predefined shape with the Shape tool, click and drag on the artboard while holding down the Shift key to constrain the proportions.

The next step is to adjust the path of your shape using the Direct Selection tool, the Anchor Point tool, or the Scissors tool. You can find these tools in the toolbar or by pressing A, Shift+C, or C on your keyboard. To move or resize an anchor point with the Direct Selection tool, click on it and drag it to a new position. To change the angle or curvature of a path segment with the Anchor Point tool, click and drag on it or its direction handles. To cut a path at a specific point with the Scissors tool, click on the path where you want to split it.
Select the "Selection" tool (V) from the toolbar. Click on the vector shape to select it. You'll see anchor points and path segments. To move an anchor point, click and drag it to the desired position. To adjust a path segment, click and drag on the path directly between two anchor points.
The third step is to apply fill and stroke to your shape using the Color panel, the Swatches panel, or the Gradient panel. You can find these panels on the right side of the screen or by choosing Window > Color, Window > Swatches, or Window > Gradient. To apply a solid color to your shape, click on the fill or stroke icon in the toolbar and choose a color from the Color panel or the Swatches panel. To apply a gradient to your shape, click on the fill or stroke icon in the toolbar and choose a gradient from the Gradient panel or the Swatches panel. You can also adjust the gradient type, angle, and colors by using the Gradient tool or the Gradient panel.

The fourth step is to add effects and styles to your shape using the Appearance panel, the Graphic Styles panel, or the Effects menu. Select your object: Choose the shape or text you want to apply effects to. Access the Appearance panel: Go to "Window" > "Appearance" to open the panel if it's not already visible. The fifth step is to convert your shape to a shape layer using the Layers panel or the Object menu. You can find the Layers panel on the right side of the screen or by choosing Window > Layers. You can find the Object menu on the top of the screen. To convert your shape to a shape layer, select it and choose Object > Expand Appearance. This will create a new layer with your shape as a single object. You can also rename or reorder your shape layer by using the Layers panel.
The final step is to export or save your shape as a vector file using the File menu. You can find the File menu on the top of the screen. To export your shape as a vector file, choose File > Export > Export As and select a format, such as SVG, EPS, or PDF. To save your shape as a vector file, choose File > Save As and select a format, such as AI, SVG, EPS, or PDF. You can also adjust the options and settings for your file by using the Export or Save dialog boxes.
