It is true that as an architect, proper application design is where you can contribute the most to your final product's performance. The thing to keep in mind, though, is that in a production system the perfect design doesn't exist. There will always be tradeoffs to be made, so the best thing you can do is choose 2 or 3 candidate solutions, document their pros and cons, reject the one(s) that don't seem to provide much benefit, and then reevaluate the remaining one(s) based on the things you learned during the process. Always document the reasoning behind those decisions in order to save someone else (or even your future self) the trouble of trying the same things further down the line. And always be willing to change your design if needed.

The implementation phase is where you can fine-tune the performance of your application, by following the best practices and standards of coding, testing, and deployment. You need to write clean, readable, and maintainable code that follows the design specifications and adheres to the performance requirements. You also need to test your code for performance, using unit tests, integration tests, and load tests. You should use continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools to automate and streamline the deployment of your code to different environments.
