One thing I find helpful is empathizing and questioning my care. If that were me or my family member, admitted with different beliefs, and culture, what sort of treatment would I want. What sort of questions would I have. I encourage my patients to ask questions, to write them down in case they forget. I remind them that translation services are available to help with deeper understanding of their condition and plan of care.

With Covid came visitor restrictions. Community plays a major role when it comes to healing environment for certain cultures. I sometimes struggle with to not allow more than minimum visitors especially when it doesn’t affect the patient negatively. In my community, word spreads like wildfire especially bad news. Showing up is not just important, it’s almost a requirement. Especially in sickness and in death. Caregivers can make an effort to understand this part of certain cultures and individualize their care.

Whenever havé a chance to discharge a patient, I like to ask them how we did as a team. If there are areas we could have improved on as a team and as an individual. Making sure they have no lingering questions or fears are also helpful for those under our care. We are not always 100% but it gives a chance to make amends before parting ways.
